Currently on view at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art is “Caro on the Roof”, an installation featuring selected works of renowned British sculptor, Anthony Caro (b.1924). The installation culls together five large scale steel sculptures spanning the artist’s sixty year career, and will be open until October 30th, 2011. The Met’s roof has in the past shown work by Jeff Koons and Doug and Mike Starn, whose popular Big Bambú installation is currently showing at the Venice Biennale.

The pieces shown invoke a dialogue on central concerns of Caro’s work, including the relationships between space and structure, and sculpture and architecture, are also interested in creating abstractions of the figure. Featured artworks include Midday, 1960 (Museum of Modern Art, New York), After Summer, 1968 (Collection of Audrey and David Mirvish, Toronto), Odalisque, 1984 (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), Blazon, 1987–90 (Courtesy of Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York and Annely Juda Fine Art, London), and End Up, 2010 (Collection of the artist, courtesy of Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York).
This year celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the first exhibition of the London-based artist who worked as assistant to Henry Moore in the early 1950s. Exhibited widely, Caro’s works in steel, bronze, silver, lead, stoneware, wood, and paper have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; Tate Britain, London and elsewhere. “Caro on the Roof”
