Munich Launches Series of Public Art Installations in Partnership with Elmgreen and Dragset

In a bid for the attention of the international arts community, the city of Munich has partnered with artists Elmgreen & Dragset for a year-long series of public art installations across the Bavarian capital.  “We hope the art will become a reason for people to come to Munich,” says Michael Elmgreen, one half of the duo. “And that by placing different artworks throughout the city, it will encourage them to explore the whole place. It’s an optimistic, maybe naive hope to get people into the streets again.” (more…)

Jose Parla’s Barclays Center Mural Unveiled

Painter José Parlá unveiled his 70 ft. mural inside Brooklyn’s Barclays Center last night.  The painting, titled Diary of Brooklyn, was inspired by writer James Agee’s novel Brooklyn, and the artist’s impressions of the continued transformation of the borough.  The Barclays center, which opened last fall, has commissioned a number of works by Brooklyn artists, including another mural by Mickalene Thomas. New York City Ballet Partners with FAILE for Inaugural Art Series

The New York City Ballet has announced the inaugural year of Art Series, a collaborative program that commissions contemporary artists to create works inspired by the company’s repertoire.  For its first year, NYCB has partnered with Brooklyn street-art collective FAILE, who will produce a series of limited-edition works for Art Series performances this spring. Having just ended its opening run at the Guggenheim Deutsche in Berlin earlier this year, Gabriel Orozco‘s two-part set of taxonomic installations, collectively titled “Asterisms,” is now on view at The Guggenheim in New York City.  The eighteenth and final project in the Guggenheim’s commission series, the piece continues Orozco’s ongoing exploration into the nature of environments, and the interactions of humans with these spaces, as well as with each other. London: “The Art of Chess” at Saatchi Gallery Through October 3rd

Over the past several years, the artists’ studio, RS&A, has commissioned 16 recognized artists to create their own chess sets and boards, allowing them to explore and reconfigure the image of the classic game.  Including sets by Maurizio Cattelan, Tracey EminTom FriedmanDamien HirstBarbara KrugerYayoi Kusama and Paul McCarthy, the full collection is currently on view at Saatchi Gallery in London.
