Art Basel Miami Beach Announces Extended Public Section

Art Basel Miami Beach has announced the contents of this year’s “Public” section in Collins Park, under the title Social Animals.  Including work by artists Olaf Breuning, Jeppe Hein, Thomas Houseago, Alicja Kwade, Richard Long, and many more, this year’s edition of the show explores the concept of art objects themselves as a community.   (more…)

3-D Portrait of Marina Abramovic Coming to Art Basel Miami Beach

Artist Marina Abramovic will be the subject of a 3-D portrait by artist Matthu Placek, set to be unveiled next month at the Art Basel Miami Beach fair.  Featuring Abramovic, standing in the center of her currently under-construction arts center in the Hudson, the work will screen at the”Jewel Box” pavilion in Wynwood, and will screen for free, every fifteen minutes from 6PM to late in the evening.  “I originally wanted it to be from dusk until dawn,” Placek says, “but we’ll probably have to shut it down a little earlier — maybe 3am.” (more…)

Miami Condo Woos Potential Residents with $14 Million Pair of Jeff Koons Sculptures

In an effort to lure new buyers to his oceanfront Miami property, developer Eduardo Costantini has purchased a pair of sculptures by Jeff Koons for $14 million.  Ballerina, and Pluto and Prosperina will be placed outside of the Oceana Bal Harbour condos, at opposite ends of a breezeway.  “Miami is becoming truly a metropolis, and Jeff Koons is a representation of that, with the visibility that he has, and the quality of his art,” Mr. Costantini says. “You have like, citizens of the world, who travel a lot, and have more than two residences, but they have the sensitivity to appreciate good things, good quality.” (more…)

NADA Miami Announces Gallery List

The New Art Dealer’s Alliance has announced the exhibitors list for this year’s edition of the fair, held concurrently with Art Basel Miami Beach.  This year’s fair features a group of 80 galleries, with a high number of spaces from NADA’s home city of New York, including Feature Inc. and Zach Feuer, among many others.  The fair will also feature a special exhibition section from 11 galleries worldwide, including Rob Tuffnell in London, SculptureCenter in New York, and XYZ Collective in Tokyo. Art Basel Announces Miami Beach Exhibitor List

The Exhibitor List for the 2013 Edition of the Art Basel Miami Beach art fair has been announced, featuring a list of 258 galleries from 31 countries around the world.  The fair has also announced a number of new programming choices for this year’s fair, including the announcement of New York’s Public Art Fund Director Nicholas Baume as the lead curator for the fair’s “Public” section. Miami’s Perez Museum Gets Anonymous $15 Million Gift

The future Pérez Art Museum Miami has received a large contribution from an anonymous donor, the museum announced this week.  The donation will see the museum getting $12 Million in cash, and $3 Million in art.  “I can say almost nothing about it except that I’m thrilled,” said Museum Director Thom Collins. NY Magazine Offers a Traveler’s Look at Miami’s Art Scene

New York Magazine is currently featuring the city of Miami in its Travel section, highlighting the city’s growing arts scene, as well as some of its most notable museums.  The magazine makes express mention of Emerson Dorsch, The Marguiles Collection, and The Wolfsonian-FIU, among others.  The magazine also offers advice on shopping and transportation in the vibrant urban hub. Keith Haring Foundation Pursues Lawsuit in Miami

The Keith Haring Foundation is moving forward with a lawsuit over the exhibition of 165 works falsely attributed to Keith Haring.  While the organizers of the offending event, Haring Miami, agreed to remove all falsely attributed works, the organization said in a statement: “The Foundation plans to continue to pursue this lawsuit, carrying the message that it will enforce the Foundation’s rights and protect the artist’s legacy in every case of suspected fraud.” (more…)

Florida Pastor Indicted for Counterfeited Hirsts

Kevin Sutherland, the Miami pastor who was arrested last month for the attempted sale of several counterfeited works attributed to Damien Hirst, was indicted yesterday on grand larceny charges, to which he pleaded not guilty.  The pastor had allegedly attempted to sell undercover officers a number of fake Hirsts (one of which is pictured here) for $185,000.  His attorney, Sanford Talkin, claims that there is “more to the story.”

The Art Basel lineup for this year’s event has been released. A press release sent Monday revealed that 2012’s 11th Edition, to be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center, will showcase 257 prominent art galleries from 31 countries. The art fair, which will run December 6 through 9, will be divided into three “sections”: Art Galleries, the main section, for more well-known organizations to display contemporary art, Ars Nova, for up-and-coming institutions to highlight recently-established artists and Art Positions, for galleries to spotlight a the opus of one particular artist.
