The Barbara Gladstone Gallery is hosting a large-scale installation by Huang Yong Ping. This is the artist’s second show at the gallery, following an exhibition in 2007. “Tower Snake” was created specifically for the 2009 show, which closes on July 31.

The temple-like construction takes its form from a snake skeleton. The twisting view from tale to head is replete with different historic and religious nuances. Gothic architecture appears where the snake ribs are transformed into arches, and parts of the tower are subtly cruciform in construction. The gallery invites patrons to walk through the passageways of this modern Tower of Babel, to better take in the artist’s conflation of different cultures and historical narratives.

Born in 1954 in China, Huang Yong Ping studied at the Fine Arts Academy of Zhejiang. Yong Ping has had solo exhibitions at the Astrup Fearnley Museum, Oslo; the Beacon Project Space, New York; Galerie Anne de Villepoix, Paris; the Jack Tilton Gallery, New York; and more. Group exhibitions include shows at Paris’s Centre Pompidou and London’s Serpentine Gallery — and participation in the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (1999); International Triennial of Contemporary Art Yokohama (2001); Art Basel (2002); Biennial San Paulo (2002); the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville (2006); and other celebrations of art.
