Mai 36 Gallery in Zürich is currently exhibiting works by John Baldessari. Baldessari is one of the leading figures in the contemporary American art scene with more than 200 solo shows to his name, numerous awards and retrospectives of his work. He also is a teacher who has influenced generations of artists. John Baldessari’s series “Raised Eyebrows/ Furrowed Foreheads” are currently being shown at Mai 36, the exhibition closes August 8, 2009.

Raised Eyebrows/ Furrowed Foreheads: People (Upside Down), John Baldessari at Mai 36. Via Mai 36
It is in succession of the technique that Baldessari has developed within the past few years that his most recent series “Raised Eyebrows/ Furrowed Foreheads” function. The technique in question is based on manipulation of recyclable and recognizable photographs into a new object of art. “Noses and Ears, Etc.” and “Arms and Legs (Specif. Elbows and Knees), Etc.” are the series that preceded the “Raised Eyebrows/ Furrowed Foreheads.” The play on fragmented body is another element that ties the series together.
