Opening in Paris during the run of Art Basel’s Paris+ art fair, Galerie Chantal Crousel has opened a solo show of works on paper by artist Wade Guyton, marking the artist’s first foray into lithography. Mining the intersections of digital graphics and analog printing, long a juxtaposition and source of both tension and inspiration in the artist’s work, the show features a range of sourced material from printed matter.

For these unique works on paper, the artist has long worked with books, intervening on them and, with an inkjet printer. These are generally referred to as “drawings” in his lexicon. Here, the works are produced with Steindruckerei Wolfensberger in Zurich. Ten catalogues from a 1928 exhibition of Edouard Manet were torn apart and overprinted with one of the artist’s bitmap files. Guyton is reassembling these ten groups of unique lithographs into new publications. The exhibition brings together the first two published volumes and the 121 framed lithographs from Volume II. The bitmaps presented here are striking in their replication of digital graphics, particularly resembling portions and pieces of digital QR Codes, used to place hyperlinks on physical material and to use physical objects as anchords to URLs and pages in the digital realm.

The result, a series of pages that present as an exhibition, and turn the notion of the exhibition as a book in turn, equally twists the digital into his realm, underscoring the digital’s role in transforming and recontextualizing how media can be understood. For Guyton here, these works are inherently tied together, both in concept and source material, but equally in the disparate patterns that cover each work, as if sourced from various parts of the same puzzle. The whole, or perhaps, the linking element, is emphasized, in multiple ways, as existing elsewhere.

The artist’s work is on view through November 18th.
