WSJ Reports Former Wife of Steve Wynn the Winning Bid on Record-Setting Francis Bacon

The Wall Street Journal reports that two sources close to the record-setting sale of a Francis Bacon triptych last year at Christie’s have said that the work was purchased by Elaine Pascal Wynn, the billionaire ex-wife of casino mogul Steve Wynn.  While her motives are unclear, sources state that she purchased the work through dealer Bill Acquavella, who placed the $127 million bid by phone. New York Times Profiles Sheikha al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani

The New York Times has profiled Sheikha al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, the head of the Qatar Museums Authority in its year-end look at the art world, calling the young sheikha a “power player” on the global stage.  “It’s most important to allow young artists today to see what’s happening,” she says. “Seventy percent of our population is under the age of 30.” (more…)

Rob Pruitt Announces Return of the Rob Pruitt Art Awards

Artist Rob Pruitt has launched a website for voting in the third Rob Pruitt’s Art Awards, tallying votes for fields including “Artist of the Year,” “Critic of the Year,” Art Fair Booth of the Year,” and more.  Winners will be announced in the December 2013 issue of Art In America.  “Conceived as a performance-based artwork, Rob Pruitt’s Art Awards are modeled after the Oscars and the Grammys as high-profile, industry-specific prizes that celebrate the achievements of their respective constituents.”  The site says. Susanne du Toit’s portrait of son wins BP portrait award

South-African born artist Susanne du Toit has been awarded the prestigious BP Portrait Award at a ceremony in the National Portrait Gallery in London. The piece was part of a series of portraits of the artist’s family; where she allowed her son to find his own pose, as long it allowed her to depict his hands, as she considers them an essential element of character. This year’s panel of judges was comprised by the painter and assistant to the late Lucian Freud, David Dawson; Sarah Howgate, an NPG curator; Victoria Pomery, director of Turner Contemporary in Margate; the writer Ali Smith; and Des Violaris, BP’s director of UK arts and culture. Venice Biennale Announces the Winners of this Year’s Golden Lions

At a press conference this morning, the officials for the 55th Venice Biennale announced the winners of this year’s event’s Golden Lion awards.  British artist Tino Seghal took home the Best Artist in the International Exhibition award for his bizarre, kinetic performance piece at The Encyclopedic Palace, while first-time Biennale attendee Angola was given the award for best national participation.  A full account of awards is listed below:

Frieze New York Announces Food Vendor List

Frieze New York on Randall’s Island will once again host a variety of local food vendors at this year’s edition of the fair.  The list of vendors, announced Friday, will include pizza from Roberta’s Pizza, coffee from Blue Bottle Coffee, and a full-service restaurant by Frankie’s Sputino.  The fair runs from May 10th to the 13th. The Armory Announces its 2013 Season

In his largest U.S. exhibition to date, Los Angeles-based artist Paul McCarthy will present a re-imagining of Snow White at the Park Avenue Armory this summer as part of the institution’s 2013 season.  The season also includes a staging of Marina Abramovic’s opera, and a performance of Stockhausen’s “Licht,” with a moonscape designed by Rirkrit Tiravanija.  According to Rebecca Robertson, the armory’s president and executive producer, the varied calendar of works is intended to “blur the line between high art and popular culture” and “ask tough questions about the world in which we live.” (more…)

Art Dubai Announces 2013 Commission Projects

The Art Dubai fair has announced its commissioned projects for 2013, including works by Mary Evans, Mohammed Kazem and Fatima Al-Qadiri.  The works range in scope and size, from a festival wide radio project to a video gallery installed within a narrow stairwell, and reflect the blend of Arabic and global artworks on view at the fair.          (more…)

The LA Art show held its opening night premier party on Wednesday, January 23rd at the LA Convention Center. During the Patron Hours, James Franco was the guest of honor and was joined by an eclectic LA crowd, with an incredible mix ranging from the overtly contemporary to the traditionally elegant. Entering its 18th year, the fair has earned a reputation for its well planned juxtaposition of traditional and modern art, and this year’s edition was no different.  The milling crowd moved easily from the traditional to contemporary sections and back, taking their time to comb through the sheer scale of the festival and its one hundred prominent worldwide galleries.

Frieze New York Announces Participating Galleries

Frieze has announced the gallery list for its second annual Frieze New York art fair.  The fair will see 53 galleries from New York join a strong contingent of exhibitions from around the globe.  Running from May 10th to the 13th, the fair will return to its location overlooking the East River on Randall’s Island between Manhattan and Brooklyn, and will again feature a full lineup of commissions, panel discussions and featured exhibitions. Munich Launches Series of Public Art Installations in Partnership with Elmgreen and Dragset

In a bid for the attention of the international arts community, the city of Munich has partnered with artists Elmgreen & Dragset for a year-long series of public art installations across the Bavarian capital.  “We hope the art will become a reason for people to come to Munich,” says Michael Elmgreen, one half of the duo. “And that by placing different artworks throughout the city, it will encourage them to explore the whole place. It’s an optimistic, maybe naive hope to get people into the streets again.” (more…)
