LACMA Announces $200 Million in Donations for 50th Anniversary Exhibition

As the Los Angeles County Museum of Art continues its 50th-anniversary acquisitions campaign, the museum announced over $200 million in new art received as “anniversary gifts” to the institution.  A number of the works go on view this week as part of the museum’s “50 for 50: Gifts on the Occasion of LACMA’s Anniversary” exhibition. Media Company Purchases Saatchi Art, Names New CEO

The L.A. Times reports that Demand Media, a content and social media company, has purchased the online art gallery Saatchi Art for $17 million. Another facet of the deal is the naming of Saatchi Art’s CEO Sean Moriarity as the new CEO of Demand Media. An affiliate of the Saatchi Gallery in London, the L.A. based Saatchi Art sells original artwork as well as prints for mid-market prices. The article reports that Demand Media expects the online gallery to add up to $1 million in quarterly revenue. (more…)

Chinese Auction House Poly Culture Could Acquire Bonhams

This is Money, the financial news site for the UK’s Daily Mail, reports that Poly Culture, China’s largest auction house, is a likely candidate to acquire Bohhams. The current controllers, chairman Robert Brooks and collector Evert Louwman, began looking for a buyer earlier this year for the auction house, which is perhaps best-known for its sales of vintage and antique cars.  (more…)

Crystal Bridges Bolsters its Contemporary Collection

Since opening in 2011, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has faced criticism for its dearth of Post-War Contemporary Art.  In response, the museum has gone on a spree of acquisitions to fill out its collection, including works by Andy Warhol, Donald Judd and Mark Rothko.  “It’s fair to say that we are very actively seeking to shore up the 20th century, including early Modernism,” says museum president, Don Bacigalupi, “though not to the exclusion of other things.”  (more…)
