Pulling visual and technical elements of different past works into a single series, Mark Grotjahn has mounted his latest groupings of face paintings at Anton Kern Gallery. The exhibition comprises nine large-scale pieces that project highly stylized elements of the visage. Nine Faces is on view through June 25.

The second annual Independent art fair took place on Thursday March 3rd to Sunday 6th on 548 W 22nd street during New York Art Fair Week. The award winning temporary exhibition forum was created last year as an alternative to the Armory Fair and featured forty five galleries from across the globe. Participants included New York’s White Columns, Anton Kern, and Feature, INC., London’s Hotel Gallery and Studio Voltaire, as well as China Art Objects from Los Angeles and Rodeo, an Istanbul based gallery.

On view at Haunch of Venison, Berlin, “Have You Ever Really Looked at the Sun?” is the first joint exhibition of Damien Hirst and Michael Joo, two artists whose often-controversial mediums (animals, a diamond-encrusted, platinum skull, urine) have offered convenient comparisons since the late 1980s. This exhibition displays both new and canonical works in a manner that allows the works’ conceptual interests to flourish, despite—and in conversation with—their formal similarities.
