A potential ban on cadmium pigments in the EU has many artists concerned in the quality and consistency of their materials. The ban, favored by the Swedish government, claims that the cadmium in paints ends up in sewage when artist’s rinse their brushes, and ultimately may wind up spread over fields in various fertilizers, but many seem to disagree. “[Nickel cadmium] batteries are the real problem, it’s just an easy fix to ban everything with cadmium in it,” says Michael Craine, the managing director of Spectrum Artists’ Paints. “Artists are not rotters; they are not tipping this stuff down the drain, it’s an expensive substance.” (more…)
The British Government has placed an export ban on The Infant Moses trampling Pharaoh’s Crown, a 17th century painting by Nicolas Poussin which was originally purchased for £14 million by a private collector as part of a sale to raise funds for the renovation of Woburn Abbey. “It would be a terrible shame if this dramatic work by Poussin was to be moved abroad permanently,” says Cultural Minister Ed Vaizey. “I hope that a UK buyer can be found and that the painting remains here in the UK where it can be enjoyed by the British public.” (more…)
The British government export ban has been placed on a 17th century self-portrait by Anthony Van Dyck, giving time for British galleries to raise the £12.5 million needed to keep the painting in the country. “I hope that placing a temporary export bar on this magnificent painting will allow time for a UK buyer to come forward and ensure it remains here in the UK.” Said British Cultural Minister Ed Vaizey.
The British Government has placed a temporary export ban on a 16th century drawing by Raphael, in hopes that a British buyer will come forth to keep the work in the country. Head of a Young Apostle (1519-1521) was sold at auction in December for £29 million, setting the auction record for a work on paper at three times its estimate. “I hope that placing a temporary export bar on the Raphael will allow time for a UK buyer to come forward and secure this magnificent example of Raphael’s work for the nation.” Says British Arts Minister Ed Vaizey.
