Continuing their ongoing efforts against the BP sponsorship of British arts institutions, a group of protesters gate-crashed an exhibition at the British Museum this week focused on Egyptian artifacts.  “BP’s sponsorship is a story of gaining favor with repressive regimes, extracting fossil fuels and driving the rising sea levels that will cause people to flee sinking cities in the future,” says protester Jess Worth.  “That story is already unfolding in Egypt. Meanwhile, the British Museum peddles the myth that BP is generous and ethical when it displays the company’s logos.” (more…)

For the 9th consecutive year, the British Museum has topped the list of the UK’s most visited attractions, the BBC reports.  “More people visited the V&A, the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum, combined, than visited Venice,” claims Bernard Donoghue, director of the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions. Activists occupied the lobby of the British Museum this weekend, in protest against the museum’s acceptance of funds from BP, once again drawing attention to the oil company’s contributions to the country’s largest arts institutions.  “They get to purchase a social licence to operate, which is incredibly important for a company like BP,” says activist Danny Chivers of BP or not BP. In a conversation with the Financial Times, Irish businessman Niall Fitzgerald reflected on his time as chairman of the British Museum‘s trustees. The former chief executive of Unilever, Fitzgerald became chairman  in 2006 and has focused his eight years in office on reworking the museum’s funding models and providing a stronger structure to the museum’s management. Under his auspices, the British Museum has entered into a profitable deal loaning objects to Abu Dhabi’s Zayed National Museum in addition to becoming, after the Louvre, the second-most visited museum in the world in 2013 . The British Museum’s current expansion efforts, projected to cost £135 Million, are currently running on schedule, and on budget, museum curators said in a progress report this past Monday.  The project will add much needed operations space to the institution, as well as a 1,100 square foot exhibition space designed for major exhibitions.  “Almost in every decade, there’s had to be some kind of amendment, adjustment or extension to the building to make it fit for purpose.” says the museum director, Neil MacGregor. In the The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman, Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry curates a show combining treasures from the British Museum‘s permanent collection and a selection of his own works. The show focuses on honoring the craftsman, the many men and women who have anonymously created craft objects throughout the ages, displaying contemporary objects alongside creations from the past two million years, according to the press release.

Running through April 18 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a show dedicated to the Italian Renaissance painter, Agnolo Bronzino.  Although best known for his paintings, Drawings of Bronzino, pulls together all 61 known or attributed drawings by this artist. In addition to the unprecedented gathering of the artist’s drawings in one location, this show represents the first solo exhibition of Bronzino’s works. The exhibition features loans, rarely put on public view, from institutions such as Galleria degli Uffizi, Musée du Louvre, British Museum, Royal Library of Windsor Castle, Ashmolean Museum, Kupferstich-Kabinett Dresden, and Staatliche Museen Berlin, as well as private collections. Drawings of Bronzino was organized by the Metropolitan in conjunction with Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi and the Polo Museale Fiorentino, Florence.
