Armenian Pavilion to Commemorate 100 Years Since WWI Massacre

This year’s Armenian pavilion at the Venice Biennale will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the massacre of more than one million Armenians by Ottoman Turks during the First World War.  The exhibition, titled Armenity and held on San Lazzaro degli Armeni island (home to the Armenian Catholic Monastery), will feature works by artist Sarkis, and is curated by Adelina Cüberyan von Fürstenberg, who has often worked with the artist.  “It is very important for me to keep the production going, for culture but also to keep the dialogue open,” Sarkis  says.  “We are the link between two pavilions. We are the breath. Whoever thinks otherwise is free to think so, of course.” (more…)

Caravaggio’s Remains to be Buried in Tuscan Town

The Tuscan town of Porto Ercole has announced plans to bury the remains of Renaissance painter Caravaggio after the artist’s remains were discovered in a church there in 2010.  Caravaggio’s body will be stored in an enormous arch monument created by the sculptor Giuseppe Conte, which will be inaugurated on July 18th, the date of the the painter’s death. David Hockney Declines Freedom of Bridlington

The notoriously reclusive painter David Hockney has reportedly snubbed repeated attempts to grant him the Freedom of the British city of Bridlington, where he has lived and worked for many years.  Local officials in the East Yorkshire town have also attempted to name a town gallery after him, but abandoned the effort when they could not establish contact.  “Unfortunately, we have not been able to obtain any response from Mr Hockney regarding the renaming of a gallery at The Spa or indeed in relation to the granting of the Freedom of Bridlington and I have to conclude therefore that this is something which does not appeal to him.”  Said Nigel Pearson, chief executive of Bridlington.
