The Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas has announced a major new art prize, to be awarded to “a living artist in recognition of a significant body of work that has had an extraordinary impact on the understanding of the art form.” The winner receives a $100,000 prize, and will be selected by an impressive jury that includes Phyllida Barlow, Okwui Enwezor, and Nicholas Serota, among others. ArtPrize, the Grand Rapids-based art contest that has made the city an unexpected stop on the global art circuit, has announced plans to expand its event to Dallas in 2016. “We want to make sure there’s an appetite for this sort of thing, and we think there is and we’ll go wherever the appetite is,” says Executive Director Christian Gaines. The controversial “Playboy Marfa” sculpture previously on view along U.S. route 90, has been dismantled, and will be placed on view at the Dallas Contemporary. The move comes after heated protest over the piece, opposed by Marfa residents for its attempt to turn the town into a space for art-driven marketing and promotion. “We are happy this has been resolved and that Texans will still get to enjoy this piece of art,” said Veronica Beyer, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Transportation. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has unveiled the newest addition to his publicly displayed art collection, Sky Mirror, the $10 million work by Anish Kapoor, which alters the viewer’s perception of height through an enormous slanted mirror. The 23-ton work has traveled the world, but will finally settle into a permanent home at the Cowboy’s AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. “The pictures didn’t do it justice, it’s just beautiful,” Jones said.
The ongoing debate between the Museum Tower and the Nasher Sculpture Center has taken a new turn, with the owners of the 42-story residential building reportedly using fake social media accounts to sway public opinion. The fake social media accounts are just the latest exchange in this heated debate, particularly given the tower’s imposition on the atmosphere and lighting of the museum. Several works have shown increased damage due to the light from the tower’s reflective surface, and the museum’s public gardens have also suffered. “For almost two years…we have watched with growing concern as Museum Tower threatens our neighborhood, spreading misinformation rather than working earnestly toward solving the problems it has created.” Dallas Museum of Art director Maxwell Anderson and Catherine Cuellar, executive director of the Dallas Arts District Foundation, said in an op-ed published last month. The Art Newspaper has published an article by Whatever Press on the increasing clout of art fairs worldwide, noting the diverse contemporary art offerings for visitors, bringing galleries from around the world to a single location. The downside, it notes, is the distracting, overwhelming environment not conducive to experiencing works past a superficial sampling. “Fairs are great for a scan of the pulse of the moment. One thing they are not is ideal for looking at art.” Says Maxwell Anderson, the director of the Dallas Museum of Art.
The Economist is reporting on the Dallas Art Fair, a young art fair looking to do for the Texan metropolis what Art Basel Miami Beach did for Florida’s South Beach. Growing from a small 37 exhibitor event in its first year, a number of local and international galleries and institutions, including the Dallas Contemporary, are now participating in what is being billed as Dallas Art Week, showcasing the city’s emergence as a major American arts hub. “It is the opportunity to reach out to the rest of the cities across America and say that you can participate in this appetite we have for art,” says mayor Mike Rawlings.
