Artists Sarah Lucas and Tracey Emin are profiled in The Guardianthis week, recounting their early exploits running “The Shop,” a small East London gallery and boutique that served as a launching pad for the pair’s artistic ambitions.  “It was just an idea we had at an Indian restaurant on Brick Lane, but we were excited about it right away. We both had an anti-art slant, and this was always more than just a shop: it was a social thing. I remember we wanted it to be in the Brick Lane area mainly because of its bagel shop! But both of us were marketgoers and had sold stuff there when we needed a few bob.”  Lucas says.

Tracey Emin, I Followed you to The Sun (2013) via Lehman Maupin

Tracey Emin, a central member of the Young British Artists (YBA) group, is on-view at the Lehmann Maupin gallery through June 22. The gallery is hosting a multi-location show of Emin’s work, exhibiting in both its Chrystie Street and Chelsea locations, as well as promoting her project Roman Standard, installed in Petrosino Square through September 8. Roman Standard, open for public viewing in the square features a single bronze bird perched on a thirteen-foot pole and welcomes quiet contemplation, something of a departure from Emin’s more well-known, confrontational work.

A new article in the Guardian is questioning the lack of gender parity in the contemporary art world, noting the lack of any females on the list of top 100 auction sales, and a small percentage of female artists in public collections.  “People are saying: ‘I find I can’t even have this conversation about equality in the art world’,” says curator Gemma Rolls-Bentley, “because so many people think it’s already been achieved. Because figures like Tracey Emin have defied the statistics, their rare success misleads people into thinking women get an equal shot.” (more…)

Tracey Emin recently sat down with The New York Times for a brief interview, discussing aging, her current show at Lehmann Maupin, and the valuation of her work as a woman.  “My work rarely comes up in secondary market, so it means that my prices stay low. But I’ll tell you about my contemporaries — if I sold every single thing in my whole show, it is still not as much as one painting of my male contemporaries.” (more…)
