Francis Picabia, The Adoration of the Calf (1941-42), via Art Observed

Taking on the endlessly inventive and ever-shifting formal abilities of artist Francis Picabia, MoMA’s current survey dedicated to the painter (and the first of its kind in the United States) has earned almost ceaseless praise, diving deep into the fluid and challenging series paintings, poems, published works, performances and films of one of French surrealisms landmark voices.  Spread across the gallery’s sixth floor exhibition space, Our Heads Are Round so Our Thoughts Can Change Direction (which closes at the end of the week), serves as both a striking introduction and an impressively deep elaboration on the artist’s body of work.  (more…)

The Art Newspaper follows the story of Udnie, a long-unknown muse of Francis Picabia that scholars now believe was model and silent-film actress Audrey Munson.  Munson “posed for him for several days, but never in still position,” she is quoted.  “He had me walk about the studio in different lights, taking different postures. He wanted to paint me in action, he said, not in repose.” (more…)

MoMA has announced plans for the U.S.’s first major retrospective on the work of Francis Picabia, set to open in November of this year.  The show is presented in collaboration with the Kunsthaus Zürich, which will show the exhibition this summer before it travels across the Atlantic. (more…)

Performa’s Relâche—The Party welcomed more than 500 guests on Thursday evening. Event co-chairs RoseLee Goldberg, Julie Blakeslee and John Spong, Toby Devan Lewis, Andrea & Marc Glimcher, Wendy Fisher, Amanda & Glenn Fuhrman, Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, and Cindy Sherman helped organized the black and white haute couture themed party, a tribute to Francis Picabia and Erik Satie, and their groundbreaking 1924 Surrealist performance Relâche in Paris. The party was honoring Milly Glimcher, art historian and curator of “Happenings: New York, 1958–1963” at the Pace Gallery, 2012.

Francis Picabia, Printemps (1942-43)

Currently being shown at Michael Werner Gallery in New York is an exhibition of the French surrealist/Dadaist painter Francis Picabia. The exhibition has a particular focus on the artists’ later works, during which he explored methods of painting beyond the conventional and expected of the time. While Picabia’s work stands alongside the exploratory French artists and thinkers of the early 20th century, it is also branded in his unique sensibilities, constantly changing and seemingly never satisfied.

Untitled, Ellsworth Kelly (1959) via Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art

Currently showing at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, England are a selection of early, unseen drawings by one of the most influential American artists of the 20th century – Ellsworth Kelly. Executed by Kelly between 1954 and 1962, the drawings have traveled to Middlesbrough directly from the artist’s New York studio where they have been hidden for more than 50 years. The 23 works are all studies for larger pieces and have been presented now, for the first time ever, to illustrate an important period in the artist’s career during which he pioneered his much-admired abstract style that has been integral to the evolution post-war American art.

Haunch of Venison’s New York branch is showing “The Figure and Dr. Freud,” a group exhibition by 31 artists from the last century.  These include past and currently producing artists, from the sculptor Alberto Giacometti to the painter Daniel Richter.  The show, which closes on August 22, focuses on the human figure as the artists have rendered it, through the lenses of the late Dr. Freud’s psychoanalytic theories.

“Pretty Ugly” at Gavin Brown Enterprise via Art Observed

Art Observed was on site at the opening of “Pretty Ugly” on Thursday, July 10th. The show took place at two neighboring galleries on Greenwich St. in New York: Gavin Brown’s Enterpise and Maccarone.
The show was curated by Alison Gingeras, of the Pinault collection, and featured work from more than 75 artists, including John Currin, Louise Bourgeois, the Chapman Brothers, Paul McCarthy, Takashi Murakami, Alice Neel, Hermann Nitsch, Andy Warhol, Francis Picabia, and Rob Pruitt, just to name a few.
