The repairs and restoration of a Joan Miró painting damaged at the Tate Modern in 2011 has been cited at £203,000.  Painting on White Background for the Cell of a Recluse I was damaged when an unidentified museum visitor leaned against it, placing both hands on the canvas.  The large damage payment by the UK government to the Fundació Joan Miró includes both restoration costs as well as compensation for depreciation of the work’s value. Mona Hatoum. Via Art Daily

Palestinian-British artist Mona Hatoum has just been announced the 2011 winner of the Joan Miró Prize. This prestigious €70,000 award is granted biennially, with the ceremony taking place at the Fundació Joan Miró auditorium in Barcelona on April 7 this year, with the artist’s following exhibition taking place there in June 2012. The jury made the decision unanimously, stating that Hatoum “has pioneered in opening up art practices to non-Western realities while showing the connections between Western high culture and transnational political and cultural events. After Hatoum, the art world has become a far more open and less self-centred arena, a process that is still in expansion and consolidation. Hatoum’s commitment to human values of concern to all cultures and societies is similar to Miró’s view of mankind after his experience of three devastating wars,” according to Art Daily.

Sip my Ocean (1996) by Pipilotti Rist, via Ars Magazine.

Currently on view at the Fundacio Joan Miro is “Friendly Game- Electronic Feelings” an exhibition by renowned Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist. The show is the largest exhibition of her colorful work in Spain and features 13 installations spanning the artist’s career. Ten installations are shown at the Fundacio Joan Miro and the other three are hosted at the Centre Cultural de Caixa Girona. Also shown are small video installations including Porque te vas? (Nass) (2003) and Grabstein fur RW (2004).

On February 11th ArtObserved was on-site at the media preview of Kiki Smith’s latest lofty installation based on her thoughts on the passage of one’s life and artistic development. ‘Kiki Smith: Sojourn’ is on view at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, The Brooklyn Museum, through September 12, 2010, marking the fourth site-specific installation as part of a grand, long-term project. Other venues included Museum Haus Esters, Krefeld, Germany (March 16–August 24, 2008) and traveled to Kunsthalle Nürnberg (September 18–November 16, 2008) and Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona (February 19–May 24, 2009).
