Glenn Lowry offers his opinion on the social and political agency of art in an interview with CNN this week, and examines how artists can shape perception of issues and crises, particularly the ongoing refuge crises.  “Their projects not only make us conscious of the scale and impact of the refugee crisis on those who are displaced,” he writes.  “They also remind us that this is not a new problem, and that migration is both a national and transnational issue.” (more…)

Robert Rauschenberg’s seminal “Canyon” went on display yesterday at MoMA; it has been at the Met on a temporary basis since 2005.  The owners have donated the work as part of a $41 million settlement with the IRS. Glenn Lowry, the director of the Modern, stated: “If you were going to sit down and close your eyes and dream of an installation, you would envision ‘Rebus,’ ‘Bed’ and ‘Canyon’ in conversation with each other.” (more…)

The Museum of Modern Art announced that it will open to the public every day, beginning in May 2013. The Museum’s director, Glenn Lowry, said that it was a response to growing attendance, which has almost doubled since the museum expanded eight years ago. MoMA to exhibit Edvard Munch‘s 1895 version of The Scream on a 6-month loan from its new owner. The painting was recently sold at auction to an anonymous buyer, achieving the highest price ever paid at auction earlier this year ($120 million). The painting is the only one of four versions of The Scream that is privately held and has never been exhibited publicly in New York. It is the most colorful one of the series and is seen as a precursor to 20th century Expressionism. Although collector Leon Black is purported to be the present owner, neither Mr. Black, Sotheby’s nor MoMA confirmed as such. It will be on view from October 24 – April 29th.

When Tino Sehgal‘s work took over the Guggenheim Museum in New York on January 29th it was a quiet experience. There were no opening parties, no fuss and none of that Art World glitter to make one jump from exuberant excitement.  The walls of Frank Lloyd Wright’s majestic rotunda were stripped bare and seem to have newly acquired a long lost naïveté.  The lobby still brimmed with crowds of people clustered around the impenetrable center. The Kiss unfolded, rolled and scattered itself in a graceful poise of a feline. The subtly choreographed sequence of animated poses referenced erotic works from Rodin, to Courbet, to Jeff Koons. Occasionally, a couple or a small group of visitors would creep closer for a brief encounter or settle in contemplative thought on the floor of the proposed stage.

Tacita Dean’s Christmas tree, ‘Weihnachtsbaum‘ at Tate Britain via Zimbio

The Tate has been embracing the Christmas spirit this week with a series of headlining seasonal happenings.  The Tate Christmas Tree 2009, “Weihnachtsbaum” designed by Tacita Dean, shocked critics by actually appearing “Christmassy”[Bloomberg]  This weekend, Tate Modern’s vast Turbine Hall was taken over by Rob Pruitt‘s festive ‘Flea Market’ – originally held at Gavin Brown’s Passerby gallery in New York in the late 1990s, this event was programmed to coincide with the Tate Modern exhibition Pop Life: Art in a Material World, in which Pruitt also appears [POP Magazine]

Italian police have seized works of art belonging to Carlisto Tanzi – founder of the Italian firm Parmalat who collapsed in a massive fraud scandal in 2003. The 19 paintings and drawings, included works by Picasso, Monet and Van Gogh, and is estimated to be worth more than 100million euros [BBC News]
