Canadian photographer Jeff Wall presents his first ever solo show in Eastern Europe at the Pinchuk Art Centre in Kiev, Ukraine, titled In light, black, colour, white, and dark. The exhibition includes 16 photographs and 7 light boxes, a mixture of Wall’s recent works and iconic images from the artist’s personal collection.

Jeff Wall, Boxing (2011)

Jeff Wall’s latest solo show at the Marian Goodman Gallery, New Photographs, consists of seven large scale photographs and four smaller ones. Most made within the past two years, the works are a continuation on the neo-realistic, documentary style parameters the artist has been working within in recent years, reflecting various pieces of a collective cultural fabric that Wall weaves throughout his ouvre.

Jeff Wall, Boy Falling from Tree (2010) via BOZAR

On view at the Center for Fine Arts (BOZAR), Brussels and curated by Joël Benzakin, the Crooked Path exhibition examines the artistic roots of Canadian photographer Jeff Wall, while pointing out the status of photography in relation to other artistic disciplines such as painting and cinema.  The exhibition features twenty-five photographs by Wall displayed with over one hundred multimedia artifacts by key figures of Western mainstream art since the late nineteenth century onwards, including Eugène Atget, Marcel Duchamp, Frank Stella, and Carl Andre  – artists designated as those who made the strongest impact on Wall’s career. By showing these works, ‘The Crooked Path’ shows the influence of  Minimalism, post-Minimalism, Cinematography, Conceptual and post-Conceptual photography, nineteenth century and contemporary photography on Wall’s work.

David Zwirner‘s summer exhibition, The House Without the Door, makes a curatorial departure from Emily Dickinson’s poem of a similar name. The works center around themes of interiority and domesticity, alluding to both the poet’s reclusive personality and her writing’s exploration of issues stemming from such a lifestyle, which moved past memories and objects towards intense introspection and deep-seated feelings of anxiety and trauma.

Jeff Wall’s ‘Knife Throw’ via Marian Goodman

Currently on view at Marian Goodman Gallery is an exhibition of new photographs in both color and black-and-white by Jeff Wall. In this exhibition, Wall continues to explore a practice of neo-realism and ‘near-documentary’ that has characterized his work over the past several years. Developing from a practice of documentary and reportage photography, Wall moved into a more cinematographic area of staged, studio photography. His recent photos represent a convergence of those practices.
