NPR speaks with Robert Indiana, discussing the artist’s legacy as the creator of the iconic LOVE logo and sculpture, and his perceived neglect in the contemporary arts discourse.  While LOVE remains immediately recognizable, Indiana’s broad body of work is often overlooked.  The artist goes on to talk about his personal ties to his work, and his take on contemporary America.  “The American Dream, that’s our folly,” he says. “That’s our folly. Matthew Stone, Unconditional Commitment to Sacred Love (2011) via Ben Richards for Art Observed

Dustin Yellin’s Pioneer Works Center is open again in Red Hook, with a series of exhibitions, concerts and events that have trumpeted the space’s return after the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.  At the forefront of the Center’s fall calendar is Amor Fati, a tightly curated group exhibition featuring works by Yoko Ono, Angel Otero, Nicolas Provost, Matthew Stone, Mickalene Thomas, Nick van Woert, Andy Warhol, and many more, which seeks to explore the wild emotions and impulses so often present in the artistic treatment of love.

Robert Indiana Wins Suit Over Hindi “LOVE” Sculptures

A federal judge has decided in favor of sculptor Robert Indiana in a case that claimed the artist had renounced work he had previously authenticated.  Dealer Joao Tovar, who brought the suit, had purchased a series of works attributed to Indiana, and was about to sell them at auction when the artist stepped in to renounce the works as his.  The court ruled that the works were in fact created by Indiana’s longtime associate, John Gilbert.
