Elmgreen and Dragset’s Prada Marfa Threatened by Texas State Law

The same statute that forced the removal of a Playboy installation in Marfa earlier this year is currently threatening the well-known Prada Marfa installation, The Guardian reports.  Texas officials have declared the Elmgreen and Dragset installation an illegal advertisement, and is currently exhibited without permits or licenses, but are searching for an amiable resolution to the issue.  “We want to find a solution to this,” said Texas Department of Transportation Spokesperson Veronica Beyer. “We know people want to see art in this great state, but it has to be legal.” (more…)

Rauschenberg Foundation to Launch Marfa Dialogues in New York

The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation is leading a push to bring the Marfa Dialogues, a series of discussions and art events combining the arts and sciences in the small Texas arts community, to New York City, with the help of Cooper Union, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Columbia University.  The first edition of Marfa Dialogues/NY will focus on climate change and the environment.  “When a number of different organizations align on a topic, it elevates the visibility,” says director of the Rauschenberg Foundation Christy MacLear. Playboy Ordered to Remove Installation in Marfa, TX

The controversial installation of a neon Playboy logo and cement sculpture by curator Neville Wakefield and Richard Phillips in Marfa, TX has been ordered to be removed.  After complaints from a local resident, the Texas Department of Transportation found that the installation was in fact corporate advertising, which requires a permit for installation. The Texas Department of Transportation has ordered the property owner to remove this sign because the owner does not have a Texas License for Outdoor Advertising and a specific permit application for the sign was not submitted,” explained Veronica Beyer, the director of media relations for the Texas DOT, in a statement. Playboy Bunny Neon Sculpture Erected in Marfa, TX

A 40-foot high neon light sculpture of the iconic Playboy Bunny logo has been erected in Marfa, Texas, creating discussion and debate over its presence.  The piece was created by writer and artist Neville Wakefield, who is reportedly Playboy’s creative director of special projects, and who has curated a show this past year at Ballroom Marfa.
