Former Girlfriend of Jean-Michel Basquiat Unveiles a Series of Polaroids of the Young Artist

Paige Powell, a former girlfriend of Jean-Michel Basquiat, has released a series of polaroids of the young artist near the apex of his creative output, and sat down with Wall Street Journal this week to discuss the artist’s life and work. “He was so young and he was almost at the height of—you know, before he died—acknowledgement in the art world of his talent, his genius,” she says. “He had people coming at him all the time.” (more…)

Caravaggio’s Remains to be Buried in Tuscan Town

The Tuscan town of Porto Ercole has announced plans to bury the remains of Renaissance painter Caravaggio after the artist’s remains were discovered in a church there in 2010.  Caravaggio’s body will be stored in an enormous arch monument created by the sculptor Giuseppe Conte, which will be inaugurated on July 18th, the date of the the painter’s death. Wall Street Journal Publishes Memorial to Anthony Caro

The Wall Street Journal has published a memorial to sculptor Anthony Caro written by Karen Wilkin, a curator and former assistant who spoke at a memorial service for the artist last year, remembering the artist’s demanding nature and quick intuition.  “While Tony was invariably pleased when you were excited and enthusiastic about particular works, she writes, “he was far more interested in the problematic, recalcitrant ones. And he was always eager to respond to suggestions from fresh eyes—respond immediately, that is, by working on the sculpture.” (more…)

Anish Kapoor Tapped for 9/11 Memorial

Sculptor Anish Kapoor has unveiled Unity, a memorial to those killed in the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.  The 19.5 foot tower will be installed at Hanover Square, near the site of the original towers, and will contain a mirrored interior.  “The chamber reflects light so as to form a column, which hovers, ghost-like, in the void of the stone.”  Says Kapoor.  “This very physically monolithic object then appears to create within itself an ephemeral reflection akin to an eternal flame.” (more…)
