Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson is preparing to bring his work Ventilator, which premiered at MoMA in 2008, back to the museum this year.  Consisting of a simplistic fan, a cable and the air of the space, the fan moves in haphazard, circular patterns above the room, illustrating the air currents and forces at play in seemingly empty space.  “I think that Ventilator is captivating to look at, but you also start to wonder what on Earth makes it fly,” Eliasson says. “When we walk into a space, we tend to look at the walls and the floor as solids, and everything between as somehow not there. We know very well that air is thick enough for a jumbo jet to take off and float on it. There is something there, conceptually, to solidify.” (more…)

For the first time in 25 years, MoMA’s PS1 campus will play host to a full-building retrospective, focusing on the work of the late Mike Kelley this October.  The retrospective first debuted at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam last year, featuring over 200 works from Kelley’s body of work. Allan Sekula, the multimedia artist and former recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, has passed away at the age of 62.  Working across disciplines, Sekula produced a diverse and challenging body of work that included film, installation and photography (his most recognized work), often generating texts alongside the work that helped to further investigations into the media he utilized.  His work has shown at the Tate Modern, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and MoMA, among others.  His death comes just days after MoMA announced the acquisition of his seminal Fish Story series. The Museum of Modern Art has announced that Stuart Corner, former Curator of Film at the Tate Modern, London since 2004, will take over as the Chief Curator of Media and Performance Art at the Museum.  Mr. Corner is also a co-curator for the 2014 Whitney Biennal.  “Artists working across time-based media—from performance to the moving image and all of the many permutations in between—continue to push and reshape artistic practice in fundamentally challenging and exciting ways,” say Mr. Comer. “I look forward to exploring this dynamic field and its rich history by continuing the development and exhibition of MoMA’s distinguished collection.” (more…)
