Takashi Murakami Dines with Financial Times at His Studio

Takashi Murakami is the subject of the most recent “Lunch with the FT” Interview this week, joining a writer from the newspaper for lunch at the Kaikai Kiki Co. studios outside Tokyo, and discussing his role in a generation of artists investigating capitalism and its intertwined relationship with fine art, including his relationship to otaku subcultures.  “People say, ‘Oh, Takashi steals from our culture.’ But wait a minute. Takashi Murakami’s “Jellyfish Eyes” Characters Included in Harper’s Bazaar Spread

A new spread in Harper’s Bazaar features the animated cast of artist Takashi Murakami’s film Jellyfish Eyes, as well as the artist himself, spending time around Los Angeles.  The set of photos includes the monsters walking dogs, eating at In N’ Out Burger, and eating ice cream, all with model Angela Lindvall.  “I’ve always really loved Murakami’s optimism,” says Harper’s Executive Director Laura Brown. After 20 years of collaboration, Galerie Perrotin Hong Kong and Takashi Murakami present what will be the artist’s 9th solo show at the gallery, featuring new paintings he created under his alter-ego Mr. Dob, as well as self-portraits of Murakami surrounded by his own characters.

Takashi Murakami Interviewed by Nowness

Takashi Murakami is featured this week in a video interview with Nowness Magazine, discussing his recently opened shows in Los Angeles and Hong Kong, his film Jellyfish Eyes, and his attempts to make work in the aftermath of the earthquake and fallout from the Fukushima power plant disaster. “Those natural disasters birthed in me a desire to understand spirituality,” he says. “When I consider what art means to humanity, capitalism and the money game can longer be the main themes of my work.  As an artist, I can heal people.  Now, I feel art is just about healing.” (more…)

In conjunction with the world premiere of his first full-length film, Jellyfish Eyes, on April 8th in Los Angeles, Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is presenting a selection of new paintings and sculpture at Blum and Poe Gallery.  Showcasing new techniques and styles that the artist has developed since his major exhibition of new work, Ego, which was on view in Doha, Qatar.
