The recent discovery of what may in fact be the last painting Jackson Pollock created before his untimely death has placed Pollock experts against forensic investigators, with many art historians debating the work’s origins.  “I don’t think there’s a Pollock expert in world that would look at that painting and agree it was a Pollock,” says Francis V. A group of art researchers, led by self-styled art history detective Silvano Vinceti, claim that they have taken a major step in identifying the remains of the model for Da Vinci’s most famous painting.  Taking DNA samples from remains in the crypts of Florence’s Santissima Annunziata basilica, the group will perform a number of tests before attempting to reconstruct the face of the woman, conventionally believed to be Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Renaissance-era silk merchant.   (more…)

Artist David Hockney has broken the silence surrounding the death of his assistant, 23-year old Dominic Elliott.  Elliott’s death, the causes of which remain somewhat of a mystery, sidelined the painter, forcing him to take a break from his prolific work.   “The spring didn’t start until late April this year. I wasn’t doing anything much, had nearly given up, and was still thinking about going to LA when my assistant, Jean-Pierre, said I didn’t really have an option. I had to continue with the work. And he was right. I’m not going to retire. I just keep working and that’s what I think I should do.” (more…)
