Chuck Close Takes the WSJ into His East Village Apartment

Chuck Close is in the Wall Street Journal this week, discussing his recently renovated apartment in the East Village.  Close bought the apartment in 2011, and has installed a number of works from his collection, as well as painting the walls a bright red, inspired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  “All artworks that interest me are constructed,” he says.  “They don’t have to be massive works. The Independent Reports on Jeff Koons’ Market Appeal

The Independent reports on the history of artist Jeff Koons, noting his time as a Wall Street commodities trader, and the artist’s immense market popularity, underscored this week by the sale of his Balloon Dog sculpture for $58 million.  The article notes the rising of wealth of the “new asset class,” and the appeal of Koons’ sculptures to collectors with a ” large deficit of social and cultural capital.” (more…)

ArtPrize Kicks Off Once Again in Michigan

This year’s ArtPrize awards are now underway, with the public voting on works in 16 categories to distribute over $560,000 in prizes.  Held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the award was created by one Rick DeVos, a philanthropist looking to shake things up in the small town. “I wanted to help develop a creative culture, one that’s open to new experiences and ideas,” DeVos said. “We’re very Midwestern here in Grand Rapids. Everybody does their thing and goes about their business. ArtPrize disrupts that.” (more…)
