Nicholas Serota Tops Art Review Power 100 Rankings

The annual Art Review Power 100 Ranking has been published, with Tate Director Nicholas Serota topping the list.  Serota is followed close behind by David Zwirner (who maintains his number two ranking from last year) and Iwan Wirth.  Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, last year’s number 1 entry, has been placed this year at 13th. Forbes Announces 30 Under 30 Art List Including Lucien Smith, Oscar Murillo, More

Art Review Places Qatar’s Sheika Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani as Most Powerful Art World Figure

The 2013 edition of Art Review’s annual Power 100 is out, documenting the most powerful players in the art world today, with Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, the head of Qatar’s powerful Museum Authority, taking the number one position.  Al Thani has rocketed up the list in past years, especially after paying a reported $250 million for one of Cézanne’s The Card Players in 2012, and after considering her government’s rumored $1 billion budget for acquisitions.  The top spots on the list are rounded off by David Zwirner at #2, Iwan Wirth at #3, Larry Gagosian at #4, and Serpentine  co-directors Hans Ulrich Obrist and Julia Peyton-Jones sharing the #5 spot.   (more…)

Eli Broad Tops List of Global Art Collectors

Los Angeles collector and patron Eli Broad is at the top of a new list detailing the top art collectors around the world, titled Larry’s List.  Contrasting with the annually published ARTnews assessment, Larry’s List ranks collectors based on Internet presence, institutional engagement, art fair participation, communications platforms, and the physical visibility and scale of their collection.  A full 60-page report will be published later this year. First Half of 2013 Sales Figures Disclosed for Christie’s and Sotheby’s

This week, Sotheby’s and Christie’s released their sales reports for the first half of 2013, with both sides announcing record sales figures. Christie’s has achieved a global sales total of £2.4 billion, including buyers’ premiums, a 9% increase on last year’s figure. The total includes the private sales of £465.2 million, an increasingly popular segment of the sales market, which saw a 13% growth from last year. The report also marks the third year in a row that the auction house has set new records for the period in both company and art market history.
