This summer, Rockefeller Center has launched a continuation of its partnership with the Public Art Fund, opening a new public work by British-born, Los Angeles-based artist Thomas Houseago.  The work, titled simply as Masks (Pentagon), the artist continues an investigation of spatial interactions that has defined his work over recent years. Thomas Houseago Installs Massive Open-Air Installation at Rockefeller Center

Thomas Houseago's Mask goes up at Rockefeller CenterArtist Thomas Houseago is the latest artist to install a major large-scale commission at Rockefeller Center this week, as his immense Masks installation finishes completion this week for a Tuesday unveiling.  “It’s so risky, and it’s so terrifying,” Houseago said. “Hopefully kids will enjoy walking in it. And maybe one of those kids will think about being an artist, and that would be fabulous. That’s always the dream, that you give people that space to wonder.” (more…)

Gladstone Gallery is currently presenting a series of new works by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, exploringhuman creativity, expression and individuation through a series of primitive stone sculptures, collectively titled Soul.  Complementing the artist’s enormous sculptural installation Human Nature, on view at Rockefeller Center, the exhibition features a series of individually carved stone statues. Ugo Rondinone’s New Public Sculptures Come to Rockefeller Center

Nine massive stone sculptures by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone have been installed in Rockefeller center this week, a collaboration between the artist at New York’s Public Art Fund.  Titled Human Nature, the primitivist sculptures each way 17 and 1/2  tons, and were installed by crane.  “My first thought was how big,” said Keith Douglas, managing director for Rockefeller Center. “He was saying ‘huge colossal sculptures,’ and I’m thinking, ‘In comparison to what?’ and multiplying times nine.”  (more…)

What My Dad Gave Me at the Rockefeller Center, Chris Burden via Artdaily

Chris Burden has installed a piece called What My Dad Gave Me at the Rockefeller Center’s Channel Gardens. In brief, it is a 65-foot skyscraper made completely out of small, stainless steel Erector Set pieces. This six-story exhibition is presented by the Public Art Fund and Tishman Speyer.
