Art Newspaper Looks at Salaries for Independent Curators

The Art Newspaper investigates the current payscales for independent curators, from Milan Expo 2015’s €750,000 salary for Germano Celant, to much lower rates for small-scale fairs and biennials.  “We’re not talking about the kind of field where you say, ‘A senior vice-president makes this and a schoolteacher makes that,’” says consultant András Szántó. “One of the interesting things about the art world as a labour market is that it is so fragmented.” (more…)

Brooklyn Museum Receives $5 Million Gift to Endow Director’s Position

The Brooklyn Museum has been given a $5 Million endownment towards its director position from the Leon Levy Foundation.  The gift formally makes Director Arnold L. Lehman the Shelby White and Leon Levy Director of the Brooklyn Museum.  “I grew up in Brooklyn,” says gift namesake Shelby White, a founding trustee of the Leon Levy Foundation, “and I remember taking class trips to the museum to look at the Egyptian collection. I didn’t realize, until much later, that it was one of the greatest museums in the world.” (more…)

Bloomberg Profiles the “Wild West” of Artist Foundations

From Cy Twombly to Robert Rauschenberg, artist foundations have been seeing a high number of internal turmoil, as trustees and advisors lob claims of unpaid compensation, outlandish salaries, and nepotism that place the foundations’ ostensibly noble missions into question.  “The private foundation world is a wild, wild west,” said Trent Stamp, founding president of Charity Navigator, which evaluates nonprofits. “There’s an opportunity for great abuse.” (more…)
