“Extremities (smooth, smooth),” Pipilotti Rist’s contribution to “Walking in My Mind,” the Hayward Gallery. via The Guardian.

Currently showing at the Hayward Gallery are the minds of ten artists — or, at least, how the artists feel they can represent the melding of product and creative process.  Ten installation artists from around the world are featured in the show.  Some are relative newcomers who are showing new pieces at the Hayward, like Swedish Bo Christian Larsson and Japanese Chiharu Shiota, who exhibit for the first time in London, and Dutch artist Mark Manders, who shows for the first time in a major British exhibition. Others are more well-established, including Yayoi Kusama and Turner prize-winner Keith Tyson, as well as the late controversial American artist Jason Rhoades.  Also exhibiting are Charles Avery (UK), Thomas Hirschhorn (Switzerland), and Pipilotti Rist (Switzerland).

Piotr UklaÅ„ski’s “Untitled (Pink Placenta)” 2009 via Gagosian

The Gagosian Gallery will be presents Piotr UklaÅ„ski’s first solo exhibition in London since 1998 entitled “Brut.”  The title of the exhibition refers to the term art brut, conceived by artist Jean Dubuffet in 1945 and roughly translates as “rough” or “crude” art.  The show, which opened June 11th, debuts contemporary mediums of work envisioned by UklaÅ„ski’s interest in a certain set of European aesthetics and politics from the post-war era. The exhibition runs through July 31, 2009.

Robert Wilson greeted his guests as they arrived at the 16th Annual Watermill Summer Benefit- an event he choreographs every summer in order to raise funds for the artistic community to which he is the director. The evening included a silent auction, a live auction hosted by Simon de Pury – Chairman of Philips de Pury auction house, over 10 art installations interpreting this years theme “Inferno,” dinner,  theater performances of various genres and attendance by many from the worlds of art, fashion and music.

From “White Noise,” a group show at the James Cohan Gallery.

The James Cohan Gallery is hosting “White Noise,” a show that incorporates pieces by various artists that focus on silence.  Can one write silence? portray it in art? Is silence merely the absence of sound or an entity in itself? These are among the questions which the performance artists, painters, photographers, installation artists, and video artists of “White Noise” confront, in an exhibition that features an additional four new works specially commissioned for the show.  Nick Cave, Simon Evans, Brendan Fowler, and Fred Tomaselli present exhibition-specific works, alongside those by well-known artists Laurie Anderson, Robert Morris, Joseph Beuys, Yoko Ono, and more.

Gilbert & George, “Jackshit,” at White Cube Mason’s Yard.

The White Cube is hosting Gilbert & George’s “Jack Freak Pictures,” the largest series ever by the artists.  Both the Hoxton and Mason’s Yard galleries will be home to the paint collection, of selections also showed at Berlin’s Arndt & Partner.  The exhibition quite literally makes freaks of Jack as in the Union Jack.  Set in the East End of London, “Jack Freak Pictures” is peopled with medals, maps, street-signs and other recognizable symbols of British identity.  The series is in line with other works by Gilbert & George, who subsume identity questions surrounding sexuality, religion, and nation into the provocative colors which their grid pictures confine.

From “May,” a Philippe Parreno show at Kunsthalle Zürich.

On view at Kunsthalle Zürich are works by video artist Philippe Parreno.  This is the first of a series of retrospectives of the artist, to be hosted successively at Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; and the CCS, Bard College, New York.  The exhibition at Kunsthalle Zürich runs through August 16.

Installation view of ‘Your Gold Teeth II’ via Marianne Boesky

“Your Gold Teeth II”, an exhibition curated by Todd Levin and named after a Steely Dan song, is being shown in the Marianne Boesky Gallery through August 15, 2009. Including eminent works by featured artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yoko Ono, Rosemarie Trockel, and Franz West, the pieces display a juxtaposition of art and craft where “boundaries are being tested, and rules of art conducted are being subverted…by craft itself.” In his curator statement, Todd Levin explains just how the art is challenged in Your Gold Teeth II-not through a deliberately simplistic method which has become a prevalent theme in the art world (as in the recent Whitney Biennial and Unmonumental exhibitions) but through the art itself.

Luc Tuymans, “Against the Day I,” courtesy of Wiels, which is hosting a show by the artist.

The Wiels Contemporary Art Center is now hosting Luc Tuymans’s first solo show in Brussels.  “Against the Day” features twenty new paintings, completed specifically for the show.  This is the culmination of a triptych which began with “Les Revenants,” a series about the Jesuit order, and “Forever. The Management of Magic,” about Disney and its influence mass media.  After its close at Wiels, the exhibition will travel to Rooseum-Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe, Black Acid Co-op installation view via Deitch Projects

Until August 15, “Black Acid Co-op,” a collaboration between New York artists Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe, transforms Deitch Projects’ SoHo space into a series of interconnected room-size installations, creating a walk-in simulation of the grungy interior of a house whose occupants have been producing crystal methamphetamine.  After signing a liability waiver, visitors penetrate into a warren-like series of rooms and corridors, ranging from a greenhouse, a charred kitchen, or a Chinatown variety store, that give off a strong vibe of decrepitude and paranoia.  In this labor-intensive and highly-detailed project, Freeman and Lowe transform medicine into meth, detritus into art, gallery space into drug den.

From “Projects: Done,” the Candida Höfer show at Museum Morsbroich.

The Museum Morsbroich is currently showing 14 projects by the photographer Candida Höfer.  “Projects: Done” will draw from both famous series by the artist, including “Twelve” (2001), and relatively unknown work, like the 1973 photographic collection “Flipper.” The show runs through August 2.

Ed Ruscha’s ‘Vital to the Core’ via STAGES

On view now at Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris is ‘STAGES,’ a fundraising exhibition organized by Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong, featuring artists such as Ed Ruscha, Shepard Fairey, Richard Prince, and a number of others. The exhibition runs concurrently with the Tour de France, which ends on Sunday, July 26th. In addition to the gallery exhibition, which is planned to tour the world after its run at Emmanuel Perrotin, Livestrong has teamed up with Nike and Supertouch to curate a line of artist-designed bikes for Lance to ride during the Tour. Those artists include KAWS, Yoshitomo Nara, and Damien Hirst, who designed the bike for the final stage of the Tour de France. ‘STAGES’ runs July 15-August 8, 2009 at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, after which it will open at the Armory Center in New York on October 2, according to the LA Times.

Untitled (Sleeping Puppets), Peter Fischli/David Weiss at Eva Presenhuber

The Eva Presenhuber gallery in Zürich is currently showcasing works by Peter Fischli and David Weiss.  The gallery has previously worked with the duo in 2005 and 2007.  The show will feature video, sculpture, photography and more by the duo. One of the videos being shown is a short film where the artists are wearing animal costumes yet assume roles and engage in experiences that stay within the realms of humans.  The show closes on July 31.

Dirck van Baburen, Young Man Singing (1622), part of the current exhibition at The Städel Museum. Via Art Knowledge News.

Through July 26, The Städel Museum is showing forty works by Caravaggio and his contemporaries in genre, the so-called Utrecht Caravaggists. Sponsored by Stiftung Flughafen Frankfurt/Main für die Region, the exhibition includes paintings by Henrick Terbrugghen, Gerard van Honthorst, and Dirck van Baburen, whose 1622 painting of a disheveled musician recently joined the Städel’s holdings.

Daniel Richter’s Angel of Death Metal, part of “Oh La La,” an exhibition of the artist’s works at CFA Berlin.

CFA Berlin is currently showing paintings by Daniel Richter.  “Oh la la” will be the artist’s sixth solo exhibition at CFA Berlin, which has represented him since his first solo show there in 1995.  Other works by the artist are also on display at Essl Museum, Klosterneuberg.

Dash Snow and his daughter Secret via TinyVices

The German business couple Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch have lent significant pieces of Surrealist and early-American Abstract Expressionist art from their own collection for an exhibition entitled “Picture Dreams,” at Berlin’s new National Gallery. The ‘Pietzsch Collection,’ which ranks internationally as one of the most significant assortments of Surrealist and Abstract Expressionist art, was assembled over the course of 45 years to include more than 300 paintings, sculptures, and photos.

From “Tom Sachs: Cameras” at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum.

Through September 16, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum will show pieces  by Tom Sachs that focus on cameras.  Since 1972, Sachs has sporadically produced works that follow the evolution of photography as an art form. The exhibition, which is in collaboration with Sperone Westwater gallery in New York,  follows Sachs’s work in cameras, and will even include an opportunity for patrons to be photographed by the artist.
