Frieze LA 2024 at Santa Monica Airport
AO was on the ground at the fifth edition of Frieze Los Angeles, held from February 29th to March 3rd, 2024, at Santa Monica Airport, which brought together over 95 galleries exhibiting contemporary art from various regions, showcasing the city’s role in the global art landscape.Â

This year’s fair featured a diverse group of exhibitors, including Los Angeles galleries like Blum & Poe, David Kordansky Gallery, and Night Gallery, as well as international players such as Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, and White Cube. Noteworthy artists and their representing galleries were also a significant part of the event. Cristina BanBan was represented by Perrotin, Lara Schnitger by Anton Kern Gallery, Elizabeth Glaessner by François Ghebaly, and Julia Phillips by Matthew Marks Gallery. Pilar Corrias Gallery showcased Sabine Moritz, Casey Kaplan Gallery presented Jordan Casteel, and Simone Leigh was featured at Matthew Marks Gallery. Jack Shainman Gallery brought the works of El Anatsui, and François Ghebaly Gallery also hosted Sayre Gomez works. Additionally, Frieze LA 2024 welcomed 13 first-time participants, with notable representation from Asia, including galleries from Shanghai and Manila. Among the larger galleries making their appearance, which were not present last year, were Antenna Space, Berggruen Gallery, Galerie Max Hetzler, and Jessica Silverman.

Another part of the fair was the Focus section, curated by Essence Harden from the California African American Museum, which showcased 12 U.S.-based galleries featuring emerging or overlooked talent, exploring various themes. Eight of these focus galleries were making their first appearance at Frieze, including Babst Gallery, Matthew Brown, and Dominique Gallery.

Frieze Music, a collaboration with BMW and the Hammer Museum, featured a live performance by Sudan Archives. Furthermore, Frieze LA hosted pop-ups from women-owned Los Angeles restaurants, curated by Regarding Her (RE: Her), to support local businesses and promote gender equality in the food and beverage industry. The exhibition “Inhabiting Time,” curated by Somi Sim and featuring works by Gordon Matta-Clark and the People’s Architecture Office (POA), explored the relationship between space and time through architecture.

Frieze Los Angeles served as a platform for contemporary art, engaging with the local community through site-specific artworks and public activations across Santa Monica Airport. The fair supported local non-profits and celebrated Los Angeles’ cultural diversity through collaborations and events.
