One of the most anticipated art events of the year, Creative Time’s annual gala took place Tuesday night at the Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg, honoring painter, artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel.  Celebrating the artist’s career and creative output, the event lived up to expectations, hosting nearly 600 guests inside the Sugar Factory’s remarkably maintained space.  Featuring a menu prepared by renowned chef Mario Batali, as well as a performance by Laurie Anderson and a tribute to Schnabel by Dick Cavett, the event once again showcased Creative Time’s reputation as a driver in the New York art world.

Barbara Kruger Responds to Supreme Lawsuit

Skateboard and fashion brand Supreme is currently embroiled in a lawsuit over its iconic logo, suing another designer for using their name and logo in a series of shirts.  The legal action has prompted artist Barbara Kruger, whose color scheme and typography appears to have inspired the Supreme brand design, to respond, calling them: “Totally uncool jokers.”  She continued,  “I make my work about this kind of sadly foolish farce.  I’m waiting for all of them to sue me for copyright infringement.” (more…)

Ryan Gander and Cory Arcangel Prepare Clothing Lines

Recognized contemporary artists Ryan Gander and Cory Arcangel have both announced the launch of their own lines of clothing.  Gander’s line is a collaboration with Japanese clothing line A.Four Labs, while Arcangel’s, titled “Arcangel Surfwear” is “all designed for comfortably surfing…. the web of course,” says a project manager. Tracey Emin Designs Cover for Harper’s Bazaar

Coming off Tracey Emin’s presentation with a CBE, the artist has designed a limited-edition cover for Harper’s Bazaar Magazine.  A tribute to David Bowie in celebration of his new album, the cover features one of her signature neon hearts with the lines “You Loved Me Like A Distant Star.”  The 200 copies of the magazine will be available in advance of Bowie’s retrospective show at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Serpentine Gallery Releases 2013 Summer Pavillion Design

Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto has accepted the invitation to design the Serpentine Gallery’s 2013 summer pavilion in Kensington Gardens, London.  His 350 square meter design, a steel lattice-work “cloud,” was selected from a competitive pool of designs, and makes him the youngest architect to accept this invitation at 41.  “We are thrilled to be working with one of the most fascinating architects in the world today. Sou Fujimoto has designed a structure that will enthral everyone that encounters it throughout the summer.”   Said Serpentine Director Julia Peyton-Jones and Co-Director Hans Ulrich Obrist in a statement.
