“Modigliani and His Time” at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Spain may shed new light on the enigmatic career of Italian artist Amadeo Modigliani. The exhibition which runs from February 5 – May 18 features 130 pieces including Modigliani’s famous nudes, landscapes and portraits, juxtaposed with artworks by his influences and his contemporaries.

The exhibition is divided into two parts: the display at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza looks at how he was influenced by modern artists such as Cézanne, Picasso and Brancusi, while a simultaneous exhibition at the Fundación Caja looks at his relationships with contemporary artists, including Marc Chagall and Tsuguharu Foujita. The goal of the show is to put Modigliani’s work into its historical context in order to help define his art which often defies categorization.
