Responding to a carte blanche invitation from Paris’s prestigious Palais de Tokyo, Algerian-born Philippe Parreno has transformed its gallery space with an exhibition meant to establish a dialogue between architecture and the concept of the show as a medium in and of itself.

Born in 1964 in Oran, Algeria, Parreno is a French visual artist and filmmaker living and working in Paris. From 1983 until 1988, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Grenoble and at the Institut de Hautes Etudes en arts plastiques at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris. His work earned critical acclaim from the early 1990s, and he has worked in the mediums of film, sculpture, performance, drawing, and text over the years, always focused on redefining the exhibition experience, and aiming to heighten the senses of the viewer to view the exhibition space as an art object of its own.

In the past, Parreno has focused on the medium of sound as a key element in his work, useful in heightening viewer awareness and sensory receptivity. In this exhibition, Parreno has arranged the exhibition in a way that offers the viewer a dramatic journey through the space, complete with with an audible script to help guide them, incorporating objects, music, lights, and films, playing with symbols, words, and sounds to change the viewers’ perception and make each person’s experience unique.

Parreno is represented by Pilar Corrias in London, Air de Paris, Esther Schipper Gallery in Berlin, and 1301 PE in Los Angeles. His work is included in the collections of many internationally renowned institutions, such as the Centre Georges Pompidou, The MoMA, the Walker Art Center, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Tate Modern.

The exhibition ANYWHERE, ANYWHERE OUT OF THE WORLD occupies the Palais de Tokyo’s entire expanded exhibition space of 22,000 square meters, and will remain on view through January 12, 2014.
