An article in NPR this week questions the oft-praised attendance records and audience engagement implying the strength of the art world, and examines the quality of evaluation that visitors to museums are currently practicing. “The art world can survive anything from the public — hostility, ignorance, even fanatical prudishness — but the art world cannot survive an indifferent public,” says Michael Lewis, an art history professor at Williams College.
