As the Robert Rauschenberg exhibition opens at MoMA, the New Yorker looks back at one of the artist’s smallest works, a small thumbprint he made for the magazine in 1964. “’We must pay him something,'” writer Calvin Tomkins remembers his editor William Shawn saying of the piece. “‘What do you think?
