RIP – Artist Robert Therrien Has Passed Away at 71

Robert Therrien, an artist whose impressively-scaled sculptures of banal objects and everyday scenes was capable of twisting a viewer’s sense of time and space, has passed away at the age of 71 .  The news was broken by Gagosian, which represents him.

Born in Chicago in 1947, he first studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, before transferring to the Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, where he received a degree in photography, moving on to USC where he completed his masters and settled into the landscape of LA.  Therrien rarely gave interviews on his work, and was often elusive in his descriptions and elaborations of his practice, but his works regularly delved into sensations of the surreal and inversions of memory, and would regularly explore the landscape of quotidian scenes. “There is a diversity in the way people see,” he said in a statement for a show at Gagosian’s San Francisco gallery this year. “Some always see flat. Others always in perspective.”
