Marianne Boesky Opening New Space in Aspen, CO

Christo Project Closer to Realization After Federal Court Win

Christo, via the Washington PostA Federal court ruled in favor of Christo’s currently delayed Arkansas project this week, defeating a group of activists claiming that the work was an environmental threat.  “We have one lawsuit in state court still outstanding, but today we took a very significant and important step forward in realizing Over the River,” Christo said. Man Calls for Boycott of Cai Guo-Qiang Exhibition Over Use of Tortoises in Installation

A New York businessman has called for the boycott of a Cai Guo-Qiang exhibition in Aspen, due to the artist’s use of tortoises with iPads strapped to their backs.  Andy Sabin, a member of the Turtle Conservancy board, has claimed that the work is deleterious to the tortoises’ health, although museum officials claim that the rescued turtles are under close watch by veterinarians. Denver Art Museum Receives Major Gift of French Impressionist Works

Colorado collector and philanthropist Frederic C. Hamilton has bequeathed a collection of French Impressionist works to the Denver Art Museum.  The works, which include pieces by Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, and Gustave Caillebotte, have not been formally appraised, but could be worth up to $100 million.  “This is a game-changing gift,” said DAM director Christoph Heinrich. “We will have the biggest collection in the West of Impressionist art.” (more…)

Christo Begins Work for “Over the River” Project

Despite pending legal challenges to its construction, artist Christo has begun the preparation process for his “Over the River” project, an ambitious installation that will drape almost 6 miles of silver fabric over the Arkansas River in Colorado.  The artist has started clearing railroad tracks along the project’s route, and taking efforts to minimize effects on the area’s bighorn sheep population.  While official construction was supposed to begin next month, challenges to permits have made the official start date uncertain.  “I don’t consider it a pause,” Christo said. “It’s part of the dynamics of the project.”
