Writer Reflects on David Bowie’s Art World Hoax Over Invented Painter

An article in the Guardian reflects on the late David Bowie’s ruse during the 1990’s, in which the musician and former editor for Modern Painters magazine invented a fake artist with writer William Boyd. “He published the book, he organized the launch party (on April Fool’s Day, 1998) in Jeff Koons’s studio in Manhattan – Koons was a friend of Bowie,” Boyd writes, “and it was Bowie who read out extracts of the book, absolutely deadpan, to the assembled New York glitterati.” (more…)

Bowie Exhibit is Fastest Selling Event for Victoria and Albert Museum Ever

The recently opened David Bowie Is… exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum is smashing all attendance records for the museum, early reports say.  Chronicling the creative life of rock star David Bowie, more than 42,000 advance tickets had already been sold when the exhibition opened last week, and merchandise from the show is already off to a booming first week of sales.   (more…)

Tracey Emin Designs Cover for Harper’s Bazaar

Coming off Tracey Emin’s presentation with a CBE, the artist has designed a limited-edition cover for Harper’s Bazaar Magazine.  A tribute to David Bowie in celebration of his new album, the cover features one of her signature neon hearts with the lines “You Loved Me Like A Distant Star.”  The 200 copies of the magazine will be available in advance of Bowie’s retrospective show at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Former curator for the Victoria and Albert Museum Sir Roy Strong Criticizes Galleries for Safe Choices

Former curator for the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Sir Roy Strong has called British art galleries and museums to task for presenting exhibitions avoiding criticism of British policy.  The harsh words come as the V&A gears up for an exhibition on David Bowie.  He says: “I always saw the role of director as primarily to lift people to paradise and to give them information and delight – and then, at another moment, claw them, so they were absolutely shocked and they were made to think about what was going on around them.”

David Bowie Releases New Video With Tony Oursler

David Bowie has just released the video from his new single, “Where Are We Now,” a collaboration with artist Tony Oursler.  The surreal video comes alongside the announcement of Bowie’s first new album in ten years, The Next Day  which will see release on March 12th. (more…)
