The New York Times notes an upcoming wave of exhibitions focusing on the work of Andy Warhol, over 40 in total around the US and abroad, led by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, which has also announced a series of grants and donations for various art institutions.  “When I say that Andy is going to be as well known for his philanthropy as he is for his art, it’s really true,” says Foundation president Joel Wachs. The Smithsonian is reportedly receiving an additional $14.5 million in government funding next year, bringing the total funding received for 2015 to $819.5 million.  Most of the funding will go to maintenance and salaries for the Institution’s various outposts and services, while some has been set aside for an ambitious renovation project for the Smithsonian’s South Mall. The Rauschenberg Foundation has announced a series of grants for artists-activists, interested in making work that engages social practice and change.  Grants range from smaller travel grants (anticipated to be from $2,500 to $10,000) up to $100,000.  The foundation is planning on announcing its next grant proposal series in November, focusing on climate change. The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation has announced its 2013 SEED Grant recipients, a selection of 16 developing non-profit arts organizations in Boise, Idaho; Buffalo, New York; Cleveland, Ohio; Kansas City, Missouri; and Phoenix, Arizona, among others.  Each will receive $10,000 in support each year for three years.  “Young institutions have a whole host of hurdles to clear simply to begin the process of raising money,” says executive director Christy MacLear. “We hope to reach promising start-ups earlier than that, both to acknowledge their initial accomplishments and to ensure their longevity.”   (more…)

Multimedia arts publication DIS Magazine has announced a new partnership with 89plus, the young artist program co-founded by Simon Castets and Hans Ulrich Obrist, for the arts grant competition Younger Than Rihanna, aimed at offering money for young artists and their creative proposals.  Hosted on the DIS website, the competition welcomes young artists born in 1989 or later to upload their work and statement, placing them in contention for over $19,000 in grant money, and a gallery exhibition this fall. The Guggenheim Museum has received a $10 million grant from the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation in Hong Kong to comission new works from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.  The move comes as the museum continues to expand its global view of contemporary art.  “This is all part of our global narrative,” says Richard Armstrong, director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. “For years people have asked what we are doing about China. This is a crucial next step.” (more…)
