Indian artist Subodh Gupta is profiled in the Wall Street Journal, as his first major museum retrospective opens at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi.  Titled Everything is Insisde, the show is curated by former Venice Biennale director Germano Celant, and includes a number of new works.   “A good artist starts with his roots and uses that cultural identity to say something larger to the international art world,” Mr. Celant said. “But for an artist like Subodh, it’s also important to come back and be seen at home.” (more…)

A recent Forbes India interview with Christie’s Steven Murphy, following its successful first auction in Mumbai, has indicated the company’s approach to the growing international market.  “The fundamental fact is that the combination of the surge in interest in art, combined with the new connectivity available online, has opened the door to a vast population of new collectors globally. This surge in new buyers, which is continuing, far outstrips any modulation in sales that macro-economic trends would affect.” (more…)

Christie’s is preparing for its first sale in India next week, pulling heavily from the collection of the late Mumbai-based curator Kekoo Gandhy and his wife, Khorshed Gandhy.  The works include a number of high-profile Indian artists, including Ram Kumar and Syed Haider Raza. (more…)

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has unveiled the newest addition to his publicly displayed art collection, Sky Mirror, the $10 million work by Anish Kapoor, which alters the viewer’s perception of height through an enormous slanted mirror.  The 23-ton work has traveled the world, but will finally settle into a permanent home at the Cowboy’s AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX.  “The pictures didn’t do it justice, it’s just beautiful,” Jones said.

Anish Kapoor, The Death of Leviathan (2011-2013), via Martin-Gropius-Bau

Covering more than 3,000 square feet in the Martin-Gropius Bau, Kapoor in Berlin is one of the Berliner Festspiele’s tentpole events this summer, examining the pioneering work of Anish Kapoor’s sculptural practice against the backdrop of his German contemporaries and influences.  Composed of almost 70 works, the exhibition serves as an examination of the Turner Prize winner’s work of the past 30 years.

Sculptor Anish Kapoor has been inducted as a knight of the British Empire this week, part of Queen Elizabeth II’s 2013 Birthday Honors.  The 59-year old Turner Prize winner joins a list of 24 other Indian-born honorees, and also became the first living British artist of Indian origin to take over the Royal Academy in 2009. Members of the now-defunct hip-hop group Das Racist will perform at The Whitney Museum on Sunday, in conjunction with member Himanshu Suri’s Greedhead Music record label.  The event, part of the programming for The Whitney’s current Blues for Smoke exhibition, will feature several musical performances, as well as several installations by Suri, including “hippie culture and spiritual tourism, the films and life of Guru Dutt, the skin lightening cosmetic industry in India, Air India, the Indian diaspora and immigration, South Asian visibility in Western pop culture, international working class labor politics, and much more.” (more…)
