Bloomberg takes a look at the difficulties behind financing large-scale art projects, including the issues often facing galleries when it comes to selling the completed pieces, focusing the study on artist Alice Aycock’s public installation on Park Ave.  “It’s a long-term financial investment,” says Aycock’s gallerist, Thomas Schulte. “One work by Aycock cost $350,000 alone in production costs, and took over a year to make, and in that particular case we needed another year to sell it.” (more…)

The Exhibitors List has been announced for the 2014 edition of the Frieze New York art fair, which will return to Randall’s Island from May 9-12 with 190 galleries in tow.  “We want the fair to make a positive contribution to New York and the response from New York galleries this year, from the smallest to the most established, has been better than ever,” reads the statement from directors Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp. Collector Charles Saatchi has announced that he will offer 50 of the largest sculptures and installations from his collection for auction at Christie’s this fall, in order to support the Gallery’s education program. The October 17th auction, held in London, will be shown in an out of use postal depot before the auction, with the offered works targeted for sale to public institutions. “We think it’s really important to open things up and give museums a chance to have a crack at acquiring these works – they need to be enjoyed and shown.” Says Saatchi Director Philippa Adams.
