New York Magazine Speaks With Iwan Wirth

New York Magazine sat down with Iwan Wirth at the opening of Hauser and Wirth’s new space in the Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea last month, spotlighting the global arts enterprise he has built from the gallery’s modest Swiss origins, as well as his active encouragement of his impressive stable of artists.  “I think with Iwan it’s not a commercial venture. A woman ranked #1 on Art Review’s Power 100 of 2012 for the first time ever. The Bulgarian curator, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, topped the list for her dOCUMENTA (13) exhibition in Kassel.  After 100 days of being open to the public, the fair received a total number of 887,000 visitors. The Power 100 is based on “a combination of influence over the production of art internationally, sheer financial clout … and activity in the previous 12 months”. Numbers, 2, 3, 4 and 5, are Larry Gagosian, Ai Weiwei, Iwan Wirth and David Zwirner, respectively. (more…)

Hauser & Wirth announced that the opening date for its Chelsea location will be January 22, 2013 in the former Roxy building at 511 West 18th Street. The new space is 24,700 square feet of warehouse style exhibition space. The public opening will culminate a year of activities celebrating the gallery’s 20th anniversary. (more…)
