Preparations are already underway for the second edition of Los Angeles’s Pacific Standard Time exhibition in 2017, which will focus specifically on Latin American art, and which is turning to South and Central American arts institutions for leadership in planning the event.  “By nature, the breadth of this topic requires bringing in more people. With PST: LA/LA, we thought we had the unique opportunity to strengthen the connections between research communities in Los Angeles and Latin America,” says Joan Weinstein, deputy director of the Getty Foundation. Museo Jumex, via Museo Jumex

Museo Jumex, the long-anticipated home of the Jumex Collection, opened its doors yesterday with a major opening event that drew art world celebrities, collectors and curators from around the world to the Mexico City suburb of Polanco.  Established by food and juice magnate Eugenio López, the Jumex Collection is considered the largest private contemporary arts collection in Latin America, and features works by  Tacita Dean, Sarah Lucas, Donald Judd, Olafur Eliasson, Gabriel Orozco, Damien Hirst, Robert Gober, Andy Warhol and Bruce Nauman to name a few. Following the success of the massive 2011-2012 arts initiative Pacific Standard Time, the J. Paul Getty Trust has announced a follow-up festival, to run in 2017.  Titled Los Angeles and Latin America (or L.A./L.A. for short), the show will explore the Latin American ties to the Los Angeles art scene, and the cross-pollination of ideas and cultures as a product of these roots.  “The fact that nearly half of the population of Los Angeles has roots in Latin America is so profound that it warrants a major exhibition and research project with accompanying publications,” said Getty Trust head James Cuno. “These are complicated roots, over many generations, and relationships between the U.S. and those antecedent countries have changed considerably over time, so we want to be respectful of those complexities.” (more…)
