Mark Wallinger, Ego (2016), via Art Observed

Artist Mark Wallinger has just completed work on his installation in the London Underground, cited as the largest ever art commission, for the 150-year anniversary of the British transportation system.  Titled Labyrinth, The work involves 270 unique mazes, each installed in a station in the London Underground system.  “It’s about the everyday, but on such a vast scale of moving people about.  That almost in itself is a colossal, almost mythical sort of function.” (more…)

Titian, Diana and Actaeon (1556-1559)

A monumental figure of the Italian Renaissance, Titian was considered  a master of color and figure whose vibrant works and striking subject matter cemented his reputation as the chief talent of the Venetian School of the 16th century.  His series the Poesies represents this skill through a series of depictions of Ovid’s Metamorphosis, pushing the evocative nature of visual storytelling to its limits on canvas.  Now, several of these works are being publicly shown again at the National Gallery in London.

Yet another monumental event The National Gallery is showing the Death of Actaeon, Diana and Actaeon (both based on the myth of Actaeon the hunter, who stumbled upon the bathing Goddess Diana, and was transformed into a stag, doomed to a savage death at the hands of his own hounds) , and the recently acquired Diana and Callisto.  In addition, the museum has sought to tie the past with the present, commissioning a number of new works by Chris Ofili, Conrad Showcross and Mark Wallinger to be shown in conjunction with Titian’s classic pieces.

Mark Wallinger’s Sinema Amnesia, via the Financial Times

Sinema Amnesia, Mark Wallinger’s most recent work, was unveiled in October in the seaport town of Canakkale on the eastern coast of Turkey. Inside a rusted shipping container, footage constantly streams of the strait and its many ships, from exactly 24 hours prior. Titled Ulysses, the film brings attention to the commerce and history of millennia, while contemplating the period of a single day – a theme from Wallinger’s favorite novel of the same title by James Joyce.

The piece is part of My City, a project which invites five artists from five European countries to produce installations in different Turkish cities. Intended to strengthen cultural ties between Turkey and the EU, Istanbul has been appointed a European Capital of Culture – a small gesture toward Turkey’s accession to the EU.

Mark Wallinger, “Ferry.”

Currently taking place on New York’s Governors Island is “PLOT 09: This World & Nearer Ones,” a public art quadrennial produced and created by Creative Time.  Nineteen international artists were asked by curator Mark Beasley to create site-specific works responding to the particular situation of Governors Island, a 172-acre island in upper New York Bay, one half-mile from the southern tip of Manhattan.  Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer, a seven-minute ferry ride takes visitors to the island, where they can discover installation, performance, auditory and video projects that respond to the developing nature of Governors Island.

Eva Rothschild at Tate Britain. Via Art Knowledge News.

The Duveen Comission series presents a hitherto relatively unknown artist, Eva Rothschild, at the Tate Britain.  The exhibition consists of just one work, which fills the 70-meter space.  Accordingly, the piece explores volume and space, as it (per Tate) “fills and disrupts the grandeur of these neoclassical galleries with a chaotic, energetic presence.”  Says the artist, “I’m hoping to create something that will agitate the architecture of the Duveens Galleries, tangling with your perception of the space.”

On December 3rd 2007 Tate Britain awarded Mark Wallinger the 2007 Turner Prize for his video, “Sleeper.” Since 1984, the prize has been awarded annually to a top British Contemporary Art Exhibition of the previous year and is generally regarded as one of the top art honors in Europe. Past winners include Damien Hirst, Gilbert & George and Anish Kapoor. The exhibition is on display through January 18th at Tate Liverpool.
