Recently, artist Aurel Schmidt launched another entry in her series of unexpected pop-up shows, bringing her uniquely visceral, surrealist drawings to an uninhabited apartment on St. Marks Place downtown.  It was a rough and ready affair, with works installed across the hauntingly empty rooms of the walk-up (one work was mounted near the kitchen sink, while another sat above the laundry machine), and a number of the artist’s friends on hand, making it feel more like a casual gathering than a gallery show.  In one room, guests were treated to an impromptu concert by Devonté Hynes (a.k.a. Blood Orange), while Schmidt welcomed guests and showed them around the space.

Centre Pompidou Announces Plans for French Pop-Up Museums

The Centre Pompidou has announced plans for a series of pop-up exhibitions taking place across the nation of France, with cities able to apply to host a four-year temporary exhibition space operated by the Paris museum.  “We will soon launch an open call for candidates,” says a museum spokesperson. Pace Gallery has taken up space at Chesa Büsin in the Swiss town of Suoz this summer for a retrospective of works by Chinese artist Zhang Huan. Known for his especially visceral brand of performance art and his equally meticulous and exacting documentations, this exhibition primarily focuses on some of Zhang’s lesser known paintings, photography and works on paper. Pace Gallery Plans Silicon Valley Pop-Up Gallery

Next month, Pace Gallery will open a temporary space in the Menlo Park area of Silicon Vallery, part of a new attempt by the art world to cater to the growing wealth of the tech-sector.  Pace President Marc Glimcher has been quoted as saying that the pop-up space represents a growing interest from clients for space to sell: “not necessarily a gallery, but we need a moment.” (more…)

Family Business Gallery Moves to Paris

Shoot the Lobster Gallery Gets a Permanent Home in Luxembourg

The nomadic pop-up gallery Shoot the Lobster has announced plans to open a permanent space in Luxembourg.  The gallery has put on shows in both Europe and the U.S., with works by painter Henry Codax, photographer Ryan Foerster, Agnes Lux and Servane Mary.  “The opportunity to work with several artists I know from the area was too good to pass up.”  Owner Jose Martos says.  He is also looking for exhibition space in the Lower East Side. Art Production Fund Launches Pop-Up Gallery in Montauk

The Art Production Fund, in conjunction with philanthropist Fabiola Beracasa, has announced the opening of an “outdoor pop-up exhibition” in the Long Island town of Montauk.  The exhibition will be held in a vacant lot at 333 Old Montauk Highway, from Aug. 1 to Sept. 8, and will include site-specific installations by Anya Kielar, Virginia Overton and Olympia Scarry.  “These artists are taking into account nature, which is a force unto itself, and our complicated relationship with it,” Says APF founder Doreen Remen.
