Trial Begins for Picasso Electrician Accused of Stealing Artist’s Works

The trial for Pierre Le Guennec, a former handyman for Pablo Picasso, and his wife has begun.  The pair recently revealed an enormous trove of works by the artist they claim they were given in the 1970’s, and which state prosecutors claim they stole.  If convicted of theft, they could face up to five years in prison and a €375,000 fine. Tel Aviv’s Dvir Gallery is currently presenting a new body of work by the controversial Algerian artist Adel Abdessemed. Known for his highly challenging assemblies of sculpture, video and installation, Abdessemed has not been hesitant to problematize the dynamics of politics, religion and social justice from various vantage points and perspectives.  From gruesome footages of animal fights in Mexico to a giant twisted airplane, his art aims to thrill, shock and most importantly provoke. Far from subtlety, the London based artist delivers strongly vocal works of art, positioning himself as an anarchist and a rebel, with the intent of redefining the role of an artist in society. Art Basel Announces List of Talks and Salon Discussions

On view at Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York is an exhibition of large-scale vitrines, mirrored wall panels and photographs, all by Josephine Meckseper, and alluding to the rise of the Bauhaus and Deutscher Werkbund in Weimar Germany, and their subsequent destruction by the Nazi regime.

Michelangelo Pistoletto, Antony Gormley Honored in Japan

Artist Michelangelo Pistoletto and Sculptor Antony Gormley have been awarded the highest honor for artists in Japan, the Praemium Imperiale.  Recognized by the Japan Art Association, the prize recognizes artist’s lifelong achievements and contributions to the arts.  The awards will be presented at a ceremony on October 16th.
