David Shrigely is interviewed in the Financial Times this week, as he prepares to open his specially commissioned installation at Sketch Restaurant in London.  In the interview, Shrigley discusses his choices for the restaurant, and his education as an environmental artist in Glasgow.  “I really enjoyed art school but I didn’t do very well,” he says. “They all thought I wasn’t taking it seriously, but I was. Damien Loeb, Tycho (2013), via Acquavella

Acquavella is currently showing a rare exhibition of new works by painter Damien Loeb,  featuring a series of paintings and sketches created over the past year, and focusing on Planet Earth’s unique position in the solar system.  Titled SOL-D, the series of oil paintings and sketches take their inspiration from a series of photographs Loeb made over the past decade, digital images captured on airplane flights, stargazing, and satellite images that document the celestial atmospheres of Earth and beyond. Mayfair restaurant Sketch has invited artist David Shrigley to redesign its exhibition space and menu, following in the footsteps of Martin Creed, who redesigned the space in 2012.  Working on the aesthetic appearance of the space, Shrigley will also collaborate with the restaurant’s kitchen, creating a series of menu items heavily inspired by his art.  The restaurant will close at the end of the year for the renovations, opening again in February of 2014.
