Blum and Poe in Los Angeles is currently hosting an exhibition of new works by artist Shio Kusaka, her second solo exhibition with the gallery.  Culling together a broad selection of ceramics ranging from pottery to small figurative totems, the exhibition examines shifting concepts of rhythm and tone as the viewer moves through the exhibition.   (more…)

Blum & Poe’s close ties to the history and proliferation of Asian art in the United States cannot be ignored, having advocated for and built a market around Japanese and Korean artists like Takashi Murakami and Lee Ufan during the 1990’s.  Since then, the gallery has become an inextricable link between the continents, a point explored in the gallery’s most recent exhibition, Dansaekhwa and Minimalism, currently on view at the gallery’s Culver City location.

Celebrating the inaugural show at its first New York location, Blum & Poe’ is presenting a show of Mark Grotjahn’s Butterfly Paintings, curated by Douglas Fogle at its E 66th Street location.  The show focuses on select works from Grotjahn’s recognizable series, which range in date from 2001 to 2008, and tracing the evolution of the paintings over a period of 7 years.

The Los Angeles-based Blum & Poe Gallery has announced that it will open its first gallery space in New York, on the Upper East Side.  The new space will be helmed by Andrea Neustein, the daughter of artist Joshua Neustein.  The gallery currently boasts Carroll Dunham, Takashi Murakami, and Jim Shaw  among its roster. West Coast art dealer Blum and Poe has begun its search for a gallery space in New York City, which is intended to “focus on our artists who currently do not have representation in New York, in addition to very specific projects, both historical and otherwise,” says co-owner Tim Blum.  The gallery is currently based in Los Angeles, and will look to open by August. Blum & Poe Gallery is expanding, and is set to open in Tokyo in the coming months. Tim Blum, a co-founder, says that it is a “major moment for post-war Japanese art. There seems to be a real dialogue going on right now.” The gallery plans to strengthen relationships with artists and present secondary-market material from both Japanese and Western historical art movements. AO was on site yesterday at Art 41 Basel, Switzerland, to see the 56 installations exhibited by the eleventh Art Unlimited, a museum-like forum for sizable and high-priced pieces. Installations of established masters and up-and-comers alike are characteristically oversized this year, with six pieces taking up over 200 square meters.  Despite the diversity of work, galleries, and featured artists, a distinct tonal resonance pervades Art Unlimited.  The lustrous style favored by Art Unlimited’s formative years gives way to a bold, rustic minimalism.  Although an intellectual understatement saturates this year’s Art Basel, Art Unlimited is hardly a quaint affair.  Economists and art experts alike are predicting major acquisitions for the international art elite, with a Giacometti and a Bourgeois notably up for grabs.
