Artist’s Black Box Contains Black Metal Band Playing Until Their Oxygen is Depleted

The annual Sculpture in the City festival has opened in London, with a work by artist João Onofre commanding notable attention.  Titled Box Sized Die, the small black cube contains a black metal band, Unfathomable Ruination, playing until they run out of oxygen. (more…)

French Embassy Announces ART2 Festival

Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States has announced a month-long visual arts festival to take place in April of this year, across 46 venues in New York City.  The ART2 Festival “will consider issues prevalent in today’s patently global art world…with the goal of encouraging intellectual discourse between institutions, artists, scholars, students and the public,” the organization said in a statement. Doug Aitken Announces Film Project at Sundance Film Festival

Artist Doug Aitken has announced a new collaborative project, The Source, examining the genesis and proliferation of ideas among some of the world’s most recognizable artists, musicians and thinkers, to be exhibited as Sundance Film Festival.  Installed on the grounds of the film festival, the work will feature conversations with artists including Mike Kelley, Jack White, Jack Pierson, Jacques Herzog, James Turrell, Liz Glynn and many more.   (more…)

German Station to Broadcast 3 Week Long Video Art Festival

German television station ikono has announced a 3 week, 24/7 video art festival, streaming on their channel and online next month.  The On Air Art Festival will begin September 6th, and will feature work by Bill Viola, Alfredo JaarWilliam Kentridge, and A.K. Dolven, among others.  “I thought why not achieve for the arts with TV as radio has been achieving for music? Why not use this mass medium for bringing the entire world of arts into the homes of an international public? ” Says station founder Elizabeth Markevitch. (more…)

Performa Announces 2013 Commissions

New York’s popular Performa biennial has announced the commissions for this year’s edition of the festival, including new works by Jake and Dinos Chapman, Subodh Gupta, Marianne Vitale, Raqs Media Collective, Ryan McNamara, and Pawel Althamer, among many others.  Centered around a loose theme of “citizenship,” the festival will also feature a special segment on black performance at the Studio Museum in Harlem, as well as the Grey Art Gallery at NYU.  “We have a thrilling line-up of new work this year,” said Director and Curator, RoseLee Goldberg, “showing that more and more visual artists consider performance an important medium for expressing their ideas, and that cultural institutions now appreciate performance for its communicability to a broad public and as essential to their programs.”  (more…)

The Venice Biennale

Every two years, the floating city of Venice floods with with the multitudes of art visitors, customers, gallerists and exhibitions that are all a part of the Venice Biennale. This year, marking the 55th edition of the world’s largest art fair, sees the continuation of an event that first began in 1896. Between June 1st and November 24th over 300,000 visitors will travel to Venice for the expansive installations of exhibitions of work from artists in 88 nations, at both official and fringe sites. Art Observed will be on-site this week, with photos from variety of events around the city.

Zurich to Host Manifesta 11 in 2016

Looking forward to 2016, the Manifesta Arts Festival has announced the location of its 11th edition, taking place in the Swiss city of Zurich. “The Manifesta board appreciated the openness expressed in the Zurich Bid and the willingness to invite Manifesta to take a critical position. With full awareness that initiating a Manifesta Biennial involves unpredictable outcomes Zurich embraces the critical discourse including the opportunities and risks that it entails.
