In the landscape of New York’s current contemporary arts scene, few figures have left such a subtle, yet enduring impact in the way that artist Margaret Lee has, both for her own work, and for her advocacy for the downtown arts community through her work with 47 Canal Gallery. Lee’s work is a perfect representation of the sort of all-in cosmopolitanism that defines her varied practices as both artist and gallerist, blending historical forms and an attentive use of formal minimalism to arrive and enigmatic, impressive installations and works.  This framework is particularly well-illustrated in …banana in your tailpipe, an exhibition currently on view at Marlborough Contemporary’s London exhibition space. Robert Rauschenberg, Tablet Series (1974)

Currently on view at Luxembourg and Dayan, the group exhibition In The Making seeks to shed light on the often overlooked, yet crucial creative dialogue between the artist and their assistant or assistants in the studio.  Organized by Tamar Margalit, the exhibition, which runs through April 16th, unfolds in a manner similar to a family tree, connecting infamous or remote dots in New York art scene after the 1950’s through shared studio spaces, practices, and the informal education process that often occurs in the relationship between artist and their hired team. Margaret Lee at Jack Hanley (Installation View), via Art Observed

Currently on view, Closer to right than wrong/ Closer to wrong than right is Margaret Lee’s second solo show at Jack Hanley Gallery. For the exhibition, Lee—co-founder of the Lower East Side gallery 47 Canal, an arbiter of art-world cool—has assembled a showroom of sorts, featuring an array of furniture-like pieces festooned with a uniform black and white Dalmatian print. While Lee’s previous work frequently dealt in a brash take on domestic objects, such as eggplant or cucumber-shaped telephones, the tone of the current exhibition is comparatively subdued. A tongue-in-cheek minimalism prevails, with polka dots turning the installation’s assorted objects—a chair, a lamp, a side table, and even a painting on the wall—into the sort of kitsch that undermines what could otherwise be mistaken as a serious design sensibility.

‘Warriors. Four Films by Luke Fowler,’ installation view at X Initiative

Currently on view at the Dia Foundation’s former space in Chelsea is Phase Two of the X Initiative, featuring solo shows of three European artists: Keren Cytter, Luke Fowler, and Tris Vonna-Michell.  This is the first major solo show in the US for each artist, all of whom participated in the New Museum’s triennial earlier this year, ‘The Generational: Younger Than Jesus.’ Phase Two also includes ‘Today and Everyday,’ a group show that presents artworks in the context of a still life photograph, an installation, and lastly, a memento. X Initiative is a not-for-profit association of artists, curators, dealers, and other professionals led by dealer Elizabeth Dee, using the Dia space for one year, starting in March, as an alternative arts space.
